Heylo.

My PS2 has started to play up, it has done this previously, and I payed a shop to fix it for £20. It worked fine after this. Great. But it happened again about a year later, so I cleaned it with some Isopropyl alcohol and adjusted the voltage.

It fixed it for a while, now it is playing up yet again. It sometimes boots up originals (which sometimes mess up), never boots up backup DVDs, and usually boots up PSX games.. but never boots up backups with swap magic (but if it does it takes about 7-8 tries and even after this it never usually works properly, it skips and all which it never used to do, (they are written onto 8x Verbatim at 4x and worked perfectly fine))

I was offered this deal at a shop - They will fit a new diode and new coils inside the laser, but if this does not fix it, they will not charge me.. any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

-Mike

While I may not be an expert in optical lenses and lasers, I can ask a few questions that may help you make your decision.

Not sure if the laser is dead, misaligned, etc. but if it's finnicky with originals, then something is wrong with it.

Are you willing to pay the price if the repair does work; and how much will it cost?

Because they're adding new coils and a diode, they are obviously going to have to re-align the whole apparatus, which is to your benefit. And possibly during the repair they might discover what the actual problem is.

If you're willing to pay the price for the repair, and you have confidence that this shop is competent and won't make the matter worse, then I'd surely take it. It's basically a win-win solution.

Signature? What signature!? Oh wait...I actually have one

It might not need replaced if it is playing some games, chances are it probably just needs cleaned. Use some Isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip cotton stick and rub it round in a smooth circular motion.

What media are you using?

Did you read the guide properly? That discusses media. If your PS2 is playing backups, and you are using Swap Magic, it's probably the media ;)

Get some 8x Verbatim/Tuiyo Yuden DVD-R and burn at 4x. This will most likely fix your problem.

It's your laser then. Follow the guide (link) I posted and follow the laser repair section.

I've heard there are several issues with that game..

If the game works perfectly at your friend's house, then try re-calibrating your laser and cleaning it. If to no avail, you will have to replace the laser.
