I tried to use the search engine but it doesnt work properly for me so I'll post anyway. Sorry if it's been answered before.

I have a collection of music videos mostly in mpg format and I want to compress them further without losing quality. I have very little experience with video editing. In some cases I have succeeded simply by loading the mpg to virtual dub and saving it as avi with v2 compression to reduce space and it still looks as good but in the overwhelming majority of cases those avis take up more space than the mpg they come from. I think that by using divx I should get better results.
The problem however is that I cannot get the quality results I'm looking for. The divx files I produce look horrible, pixelly and have poor color depth. I know divx can be very good because I have seen movies with it and they look great. I tried with the 503 divx pro and the old divx 412, no difference.
Then I tried the fast and low motion hacks already in virtual dub and the results were much better(not pixelly, correct colors). But there were many problems with artifacts in the encoding so I deleted them.

I really cant see why I cant get the 503(or even 412) codecs to work well. I tried most of the obvious settings, like bitrate allowance or color depth setting, and besides, I dont need to change any other setting with fast-low motion divx hacks of virtual dub and dont have those problems so it must be something else.

Does anyone have a clue what I should do or have any suggestions?

If it were me and the mpeg files are of good video quality then don't convert to DivX. Are the mpeg files MPEG1(VCD) or MPEG2(SVCD)?. Converting from mpeg to divx is called transcoding, which in the end even reduces the video quality of the original file. This method you can still play the backups on your pc and dvd player (if compatable).
