Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can help with this. I have a bunch of divx avi's that i want to burn to SVCD. Nero is able to re-encode them but the resolution it uses is higher than the original file, and as a result the video gets distorted. Can the Nero SVCD plugin be configured in any way (resolution, bitrate etc)? I cant seem to find any properties for the plugin apart from the default options on the program itself (i.e. fit to 80 min CD etc).

Also, (newbie subquestion) I was wondering how various SVCD encoders compare quality wise. TMPGenc or Cinema Craft seem to be generally accepted as the best, but are pretty complicated. Are internal SVCD encoders such as the ones found in DVDx really bad compared to TMPGenc? Quality IS an issue, so if there is a noticeable difference i'll sit down and learn how to use TMPGenc or DVD2SVCD if I have to.

Any help on either of these would be much appreciated and apologies if there are a gazillion similar postings I've missed!

Many thanks,

Joe

Toss Nero aside and use DVD2SVCD using CCE (Cinema Craft Encoder), the fastest encoder and most reliable!

Great - thanks. One final question. If I have a bunch of divx avis that i want to burn as one SVCD, how would i go about doing that? Do I join them then convert, or convert them separately then add them to VCDEasy as separate files? Problem is they're from various sources so joining them might be a problem.
Thanks again,
Joe

Unless the DivX(AVI) clips are short in length, I would convert them 1 by 1 m8. This process might be lenghty but it's well worth it after all finished.

Ok - LAST question for this thread (and thanks for your advice btw).

I downloaded Ulead's Videostudio for a try. I'm guessing you're not too keen on it :) but here's the question. I've got the hang of AVI2SVCD / CCE and it works great BUT Videostudio has a great (S)VCD menu/chapter making feature (customizable stills/fonts/chapters background music etc).

The question is, if I open my mpeg2's created with AVI2SVCD / CCE and burn them using VideoStudio, will it re-encode them (like Nero) or just burn them directly with the menus I want? (Btw I've tried VCDEasy and unless I'm missing something, I can only have one still and no chapter menus/stills - but as I say maybe i'm missing something...)

Thanks again

I've tried ulead software, (which is all, almost the same, just with different names!!) and I can tell you now that its not a good idea to use it!!

First of all, why do you want a menu anyway?? They suck and dont work half the time anyway! Also Ulead Likes to re-encode VBR SVCD movies for odd reason! It basically barely gives you any choice wheras with VCDEasy you have flexibility. And it is possible to create a menu with VCDEasy, however it's not that easy to do! http://www.vcdeasy.org

You should use it because its better than ulead software and it doesnt cost anything!

Thanks Dela - You're right, I'm sticking with DVD2SVCD/VCDEasy. But another problem has now cropped up, with my VCD's and SVCD's breaking up all over the place. Please see a message i posted today - I'd really appreciate your input on it.

I had the samke problem i think, is it that when you play it back in a stand alone, it freezes and the audio messes up, especially when you skip chapter??

I doesnt really freeze and it happens regardless of whether i move by chapter of if the movie runs by itself - its starts by gradually showing a couple of off-color pixels here and there, then the image gradually becomes more and more "pixelated" (imagine a bad satellite tv image) and then eventually breaks up and the audio gets choppy. The weird thing is it happens almost exactly at the halfway mark of the video. Did you manage to find the source of the problem with your player?
