Yes you need the crossover cable because you connect directly from pc to xbox.

wait...does your internet go out or is there a problem with your ip and network card. You don't need the internet to ftp to your xbox.

oh yes, I wouldn't suggest a crossover cable because it becomes more involved (aka setting up static ips in you box) its very easy just to do it with a router

using a router or strait to the PC, you still need a crossover cable.
I have done it both ways, and i use the same crossover cable after i bought my router as i did when i went strait to the PC
and you still have to configure all the settings on your Xbox and on your FTP program.
You may need to set up your main connection for network sharing.
I know when i first tried to FTP mine was not set up and i had the same problem. Every time i tried to connect the internet would go out on me. Once i set it up for connection sharing, got all my lan settings out into my Xbox and FTP program it all worked.
see the network sharing and FTP tutorials here and go over everything again to make sure it is all right.

not even the router.
Xbox, PC & Crossover cable along with an FTP program.
it is the setting up of all these things that seem to give people
major problems. It is easy to hook up the crossover, easy to download and install the FTP program, then they get to the part where they have to set it all up so they can connect and it's all over :)
