I heard somewhere that dvds last more than a hundread of years. I also heard that burned dvds and cds last about 5years. My question is why does the dvds you buy from a store last 100year and burn dvd last only 5?

Mass produced DVDs are pressed stampings of the data on a metal reflective surface sandwiched between two pieces of polycarbonate or plastic, and the relective surface could be made of gold or silver or aluminum. The DVD Rs that we burn are made up of organic dyes which react to the heat of the laser, the better media manufacturers will use a higher quality composition of ingredients which prevent the organic dyes from deteriorating after they have been burned and reheated numeruos times. Everytime you watch a DVD it will reheat the disc, not enough to damage it , but the heat and reheat cycles are one of the contributing factors, ever feel the disc after you just watched an hour and a half long movie? Its kinda warm... The dye will crystalize from the laser and make its mark in the crystalized or hardened dye, but like all organic and plastics they do deteriorate with heat and age. Hope this simplifies it for you..I do not think the factory pressed DVDs will last a 100 years...but our grandchildren will know that answer....

Here's a great paper on CD/DVD construction, care and handling.

If it's ultimate longevity you're after then the message is to choose a disk with a gold reflective layer. I've found a couple of manufacturers of these and I'm trying them for my most precious data. Unfortunately only time will tell...
