Beware - Do not purchase this product! I have pasted a message to ILO regarding (DVDR05MU) their DVD Recorder -

After owning the most terrible electronic device I have ever touched for a month, finally was I able to get it configured to my current system (keep in mind I am a programmer and build computers - I pity typical consumers). I became really excited upon configuration until I discovered this piece of crap only recognized 1 out of app. 100 DVD's. My currently owned movies will not play, well with the exception of 1 and it froze over and over, and when I could get a blank DVD + R (to be recognized - tried about 50) to act like it was recording, it errored out at the end of the recording. The only one I was able to finalize errored out during this process!

My husband bought this for me as a birthday present. I seriously doubt he kept the receipt, even if I can not find the receipt I demand full reimbursement for this piece of crap! How dare you release a product this terrible to the public. This was my first and without a doubt last ILO purchase I will ever make. I am also going to warn others! (my mother got one for Christmas - it never worked either and was returned to Walmart!)

SHAME ON YOU!

Against my better judgement, I just had to answer.

First I have had the 05 units and have found them to be very good units that work very well. Like many other very good units they also will not do what I require. By the way I have two ilo RHD04 that will.

What is your problem?
My experience with WalMart, take it back without a receipt they give you a full refund in the form of a purchase card. With a receipt you get a full refund in cash or a credit card credit
Sounds Fair.
Being mad at WalMart is one thing
It?s your quote that got me

------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Quote

"(keep in mind I am a programmer and build computers - I pity typical consumers)."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Who asked for your pity. What is your definition of a typical consumer?

I am now retired but had my own computer sales and service operation.
I?ve gained a lot of information from these forums on many issues

I?ve run into people like you before. [Experts at computers and all things]
You are most likely the office computer ?Guru? that has everybody thinking you know something when you don?t
With all your expertise, you could not even figure out how to hook up [configure] a 05 DVD to your (vast) system. Against all odds you finally did and your DVD would not play. Could it be that you were not successful and/or the disks were not burned properly. That you do not understand + or- disks or their use.

Your post might have asked some questions, to find answers

(Edit) I do have Pity and Sympathy for your Husband.

i just bought a floor model dvdr04. I had to beg walmart. I convinced them that they are displaying a model different then the one they are selling (which is true). I LOVE it, its hacked and has had NO problems so far. Got it for 40 bucks; only had to buy a remote for it.

You got a good machine and the price was great.
Get used to it, Don't push it.

I was speeking to a button press, The ilo remote works very much as a macro in PC software.

As an example
You are in edit, By mistake you press the enter button while on erase a message comes up are you sure. By default the option is OK another press it will erase. Default should be Cancel but it isn't,you could say Cancel and exit out.
You push the enter button and hold it for a second to long or push it twice because it didn't seem fast enough. the system will go right through the operation and erase whatever you are on.

Not good but you have to understand the machine.
All have there quirks

I had the previous model for short time. I thought the quality of the video was extremely high. It had a 3:00 Hr mode that I like because that is about the size of football games I record.

I now have a Panasonic DMR-ES10. I don't think the quality of the recording is a good as the ILO-04 model.

I am probably going to try an ILO-05 connected to my DMR-ES10 to do some editing.

I don't think you will have problem returning your ILO to Wal-Mart if you haven't already.

I just purchased a DVDR05 from Wal-mart and have used it only a couple times. I tried to record on a Imation DVD+R with not a whole lot of success. I tried again with a TDK DVD+RW, and the quality is super. My only problem is to make copies for family members. I have tried all my coping programs to no success. Does the recorder put the files in some un-normal system. Does anyone have the fix?

if you are recording to RW then you are recording in on a VR formatted disc and you need to have it instead -R formatted. Look at the forums list that LCSHG posted and there is a thread in one of them that tells how to do this.

this is to BIGROY, I tried to copy something I recorded on my ILO 05 to my computer hard drive. It seems to work all the time if there's only one title/recording on the DVD. For some reason, if I record more on it, it usually comes up with an error when it's copying.

This is to RENAENICK, I love my ILO 05!!

This is to whoever couldn't play a recorded DVD on another player
You probably have to finalize the disc if you're using a
DVD-/+R, instead of RW. On mine, it asks if you want to when
you press eject, just press enter after pressing eject.

I have found sometimes when copying I make a disk image first and then create the DVD from the image.

My ILO recorder, the 05 MU had an audio slurring problem.... audio way off. I exchanged it for an MU1... had to dig. Works perfectly. It *seems* to accept (-) media. My first attempts weren't so good.... but then I fiddled around too much, editing and retitling a bit.

*Supposedly* the MU1, with the latest firmware, has corrected all the problems with the '05. The ZU was total garbage... the MU was getting there.. and the MU1 finally made this recorder something to be regarded as a reliable machine.

When I went to hunt for an MU1, there were only 2 out of a stack of about 15. There were a lot of way outdated ZUs amongst the MUs.

Ive had the 05 - ZU,MU and MU1. The ZU was a bummer
The MU and MU1 operate the same. Both are good units and should exibit no difference in operation. The MU1 has a [different] Microtek chip set fron the One used in the MU and the firmware is not the same. The chip may be more compliant to CP? Other than that they both operate the same
I had no problems with sinc in any units and do not see any problems In the MU that were corrected
The ZU YES

I just got a Jan 06 MU, but see nothing to indicate whether it is a MU or MU1. Can anyone tell me how I know which I have?

Thanks

There is a barcode on one of the sides of the box. It has the model as well as the Bios version. This same barcode is on the bottom of the unit itself. It will plainly say which one it is. You'll See DVDR05ZU, DVDR05MU, or DVDR05MU1 listed.

There are a LOT of ZU and MU units still in the stores. Out of the 12 or so in the store where I got mine, only 2 were MU1 units.

The 04 is made by LiteOn It can be hacked
The 05 is made by Cyberhome It cannot be hacked

Do not get a ZU model they had problems and the edit sucks
The 05 MU and MU1 are basicly the same
The firmware updates are for the MU
There are no updates for the MU1

I had them all and have found the MU and MU1 to be good units

Hello all! I am having a problem maybe someone would know something about.

I have tried all sorts of media in this machine(**edited to add it is the DVDR04 model) and can't seem to get it to record. It recorded on the DVDRW that was provided with the player but no matter what I put in it now I get the same error.

I read a lot of what was here and I did get some Verbatim DVD+RW and update the firmware with the unhacked version of the upgrade. This is what is happening(still):

I put the disk in and the screen reports that it is reading. The dvd player says load. After a few seconds the screen says preparing and a series of dashes are on the player. After a moment or two the screen and the player will say fail and then the screen says invalid disk and I can't do anything with it unless I eject the disk first.

Am I missing a step, is there something wrong I am overlooking, or is this thing just defective?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

I hate jumping to conclusions like this, Aezarien; but the steps that you are listing are the exact steps that I use to put in my blank DVDRW's. If it is failing like you are saying, then I would think the thing is defective.

The only suggestions I could think about are to use a different media, I personally use Maxell DVD+RW discs that I buy from Walmart. Or if you have a DVD-Burner on your computer, burn something onto one of those discs you are using, then erase it, place it into your ILO and see what happens.

Also, did you just buy this machine, or have you had it for a while and now it decides to stop working?

I've had it for a year or so and it hasn't burned a dvd since it burned the one it came with. I've tried the Maxell type and they fail too although I haven't tried one since I did the system update. I'll go do that and try the other suggestion now and see what happens.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know what I turn up!
