INSTALL.CNF commands

While creating the INSTALL.CNF script, I want to make sure I use the correct commands to create a directory in the memory card and copy the needed files.
Will either commands MKDIR or MD work?
Also,is there a difference between the commands COPY and CP?

To my knowledge CP is short for command copy.
