Hi,
I just ripped a dvd to my harddisk and tried to watch it withWinDVD 2000 like a normal DVD.
I made a subst v: d:\videos\AmericanBeauty (the directory containing the video_ts folder) and set the default drive in WinDVD properties to v: But when I start WinDVD it doesnt play the movie automatically. I have to select all vob files manually in the play list. Then I have no menues, language select and so on What can I do? I tried DVDStarter with the same result.
I would like to have the same handling like with an normal DVD

Thanks
Jürgen

The VOB files aren't enough, you also need IFO files, etc in order to make the movie behave like a real DVD disc, although I'm pretty sure players wont recognize the subst drive anyway and you still need to select the files manually -- but I'm not sure anyway.

Hi,
I was trying to get DVDStarter 2.0 Beta working with WinDVD 3.0 under Windows XP and it didn't work. After carefully following all the instructions in the ReadMe.txt it mapped the drive correctly and was showing the "green status" under GUI, however double-clicking on the movie entry in the GUI window just opened up WinDVD with no VOB files loaded, so it could not play.
The simplistic alternative to the problem does not require any additional software and all you need as a result of ripping is just the VOB files (no need for BUP and IFO files, save some space!).
Just create a shortcut icon of WinDVD.exe, go to Properties of this icon and list the VOB files separated by the space character) in the Target field immediately following the WinDVD.exe. Make sure to include the full drive path for each of the VOB files. I am not sure; however, what is the limitation on a number of characters you can put in the Target field for an icon's properties.

E.g.:

Target:
"C:\Program Files\WinDVD.exe" D:\Movies\Meet the Parents\vts_01_1.vob D:\Movies\Meet the Parents\vts_01_2.vob D:\Movies\Meet the Parents\vts_01_3.vob

Just OK the Properties of an icon after modifying the Target field, then double click the icon and you are ready to go! When running the WinDVD with pre-loaded vob files you may check that they are now shown in the play list. Enjoy the movie!

...or use PowerDVD which supports VOB/VCD/SVCD playback directly.

WinDVD supports the playback of VOB files as well. The issue was of how to store a group of VOB files on a Hard Drive and automate a sequential play for them, so you don?t need to open WinDVD, create a play list, and manually load it every time you need to play a movie containing multiple VOB files.
You just do it once on a icon level.
Plus the VOB files is all you need, no BUP or IFO.

But is there anyway so that I CAN play the IFO files? I had some chinese DVDs, once ripped(simple copy and paste in Windows explorer), I could just go into my Compaq DVD Player, select the ifo file in VIDEO_TS, and menus would start, I can select subtitles...etc and play the movie, no need for subst, but, the software will ot work with U.S.-spec ripped DVDs, any suggestions?
