Just in case, if you're looking for a new provider, Giganews has treated me well. Plus, they have a great retention!

I'm new to this newsgroups but I've seen them advertised and they are quite attractive. How does it compare to any P2Ps progs or torrent sites that you might have used. Is it really apples and oranges or am I disillusioned.

once you use newsgroups, you will rarely use torrents again
there is no sharing involved, and you max out the connection speeds constantly, and instantly
but there is a catch....there not free

That's OK by me once the service it good and does what it advertises. I've been duped once already where I subscribed to a site which in the end just provided me with a list of p2p progs. I certainly felt stupid more than angry.

Thanks for the sentiments but you wouldn't be saying that if you actually knew me :) Been over it since it happened a while back.

Bit torrent against newsgroups, it's like comparing a Lada to a Rolls. In the last 2 years I have manage to download about 180gb from bit torrent sites. A colleague told me to try out newsgroups, hadn't heard of it but looked into it. I have only been using it since last weekend and have already downloaded 40+ gb. There are a couple of snags.
If your ISP doesn't provide newsgroups then you have to pay, Blueyonder (UK) give it free I don't know of any other ISPs. I am with AOL they certainly don't. The downside is you have to pay extra for access to newgroups, I am using Thundernews.com, they seem to be one of the cheapest and offering a selection of packages, I opted for the unlimited package for 1 month, costing about £11 for the month, well worth it so far. You also need a newsreader, Thundernews provide one free, but I got newleechers from pirate bay. To access the NZB file to download all the goodies you need to register with another site, I am using newsbin.com, £2 for two months.
Now for the speeds, as previously stated by another member you get the max download speed and sometimes then some. I have a 2mb connection and should only be able to get 256kbps, I have seen it up at 297kbps, go figure. Can't wait until I get my 8 mb connection.

ya I noticed alot of senior/addicts showing inactive. It could do with which email address they associate with aD. aD sends out newletters, etc and if it don't get checked or gets bounced back then they will show as inactive.
