Digital Max DVD recorder Firmware update

I just bought a Digital Max DVD recorder from CC. The unit will not take the firmware upgrade from its website. It doesn't recognize the upgrade of firmware it just says "data disc" and will not pick it up. However I was able to change the region setting with the remote. Is there a firmware firmware/hack that I can upgrade this to? Can I make it Macro vision free? VHS to DVD.
Any info. is appreciated
