I have archived many home movies to SVCD to store them at high quality.I now have a DVD burner and I want to pull the MPEG files out and assemble them in my DVD authoring software.
Is there any quick way to convert these files to DVD ready format? Any help would be appreciated.
SVCD is a very unfortunate format in this particular use, since DVD standard doesn't support SVCD resolution (480x480/576), but only full resolution (720x480/576) or CIF/VCD resolution (352x240/288) -- the fact that players play SVCD clips doesn't matter, which sucks :-P
So, what you need to do is to re-encode the clips (weakens the quality...) to MPEG-2 _again_ (as SVCD == MPEG-2 already) with DVD resolution.
Also, the audio needs to be re-encoded as DVD only accepts 48kHz audio and SVCD/VCD only accepts 44.1kHz. Use tooLame to re-encode the audio clips as it provides the best overall audio quality for .mp2 files (which is the format, not .mp3, for VCD/SVCD/DVD).
Actually there IS a trick available for SVCD->DVD-R as well, but this basically is a _hack_ and doesn't produce valid DVD-Rs, so whining afterwards if anyone follows this, when your DVD player doesn't play the track, is useless ;-)
The trick is to fool the DVD authoring tool to believe that the video is in deed in DVD resolution by modifying the MPEG-2 headers of the file. Then we just have to hope that the player itself understands that it has been tricked and still plays the video clip in correct resolution.
what is the best software for converting svcd to dvd-r? Is there any all in one as ive been having problems? I use dvd2avi to merge the files then tmpeg to convert them to dvd pal complient file then author them and burn with ulead dvd factory. The results are spectacular and play in all the dvd players ive tried but i have one glich sometimes it will flicker badly for a few minutes and the carry on as normal what could this be? It seems to start when ive encoded the files with tmpeg or avi2dvd is it the software? If this didnt happen they would be near perfect HELP ME PLEASE AS IT IS DOING MY HEAD IN
