I saw on the modchip.com that they install or ship a laser fix for the v12-14 models. I thought the new model was safe from the laser issues. This would be good information to know before I travel down the modding path.

Also I have a 500gb USB drive, will this work? Also what does it entail to get it working.

well, they say they fixed the laser problem after the V12
the company may just be putting it in there just to be sure.
Better safe than sorry, if it's free i say take it.

A USB HDD may work, You will need USB Extreme to use it.
Not sure how well it will work with the chip or if the chip will effect it at all. I know some chips like DMS4 Pro have support for HDD's but only for the IDE type (internal i think)
But from what i have heard the game compatibility on PS2 HDD's need a bit of work.
