you need a mod chip or swap discs (a boot disc that you put in fist to boot then swap with your back up)

yes, you have to mod your system to play back ups.
Swap Magic and an aftermarket fliptop is one way
A good mod chip installed by a professional is the best way.
It will cost you more initially but will be so much less hassle in the long run for so many reasons that i will not bother trying to list them all. But if you search the posts here i am sure you can find them.
Settle for no less than a DMS4 Pro (now DMS4 Pro SE)
or Matrix Infinity. These chips can be upgraded for free just by downloading a simple flash and burning it to CD, then playing it in your PS2. They upgrade the flash at least 2 times a year usually.

Make sure that if you decide to get Matrix Infinity, that you don't get one of the many fakes (clones).
You're best bet as Steimy pointed out, is the DMS4 chip. I use swap magic with the slidetool myself, but what from what I've heard it is a very reliable, feature-rich modchip.

Thanks for the info about the chips. Unforutnately I am going to have to do the chip myself, due to where I live. Any good suggestions about the chip and slidetool. Will instructions come with the tool or can I find them on here.

you do not use a slidecard with a chip, you use it with Swap Magic.
That is the whole reason for getting a chip is not swapping and all that other junk.
you can try to get a solderless chip, which if you take your time and are very careful you should be able to install yourself. That is if you have a V5-V11 PS2
If you really think you are a wizard with a soldering iron then you can get a solder in type and try to pull off this install
if neither of those apply to you then just bite the bullet and get Swap Magic and a fliptop. They are a bit more of a pain and some games will require rebuilding to work, but they will do the trick if you have no other options.

Just curious, where do you live? If it's anywhere in the continental U.S., you can easily order a pre-mod from www.xmodd.com and they will ship it to your house.

Right now I am living in Germany. I know I can have the chip sent to me over here, but I do not know of any place I can take it in to have it put in.

I tried using DVD Decrypter to back-up God of War. The resulting file was much to large to fit on a standard DVD-R. any words of advice?

thanks, that was very helpful, what I am talking about is the correct method of using the fliptop and swap magic disk to load the backup, I guess that is how it works, the steps you take to actually get to play the backup with those components
