Hello guys, i live in japan and i'm facing a real shortage of playable games here , thanks to their picky language Smile i really wanted to play rpgs and other games that rely on text data but i need a modchip to do that...and heard that the best-of-breed out there is the DMS4 Pro [a friend of mine in brazil still has his old V7 running DMS3 and works without a hitch]
hmmm...any help is appreciated, there goes the questions:
1-there are _NO_ places in Japan where i can buy the chip, can anyone recommend a web modchip store which ships to japan?
2-my ps is model SCPH-75000CB [Charcoal Black] -slim- NTSC/Japan, it's V14 right? [i don't know, any help on identification? do i need to take apart the PS2 to know the real mobo model?], it can be done, and has been proven successful ? any japanese 75000XXX consoles moded ? if there are people willing to help....
3-is it hard to assemble? i have some soldering experience but never modded any console.... took apart a friends' old PS2 once and did some cleanup just for fun.... and those solder points are really straightforward, looking at the photos just seemed one has to care a bit about solder quantity, but other than that, seems fine, any tips or advice from experienced users/modders out there? thanks again in advance.
4-what's the checklist? are the diagrams easy to follow on DMS4 box [english/multilingual?] ?
5-does it comes with wires or do i have do buy that nice pack of wires like you guys are using ? [seems pretty pro, all wires glued together and with the correct distances]
resuming, there are a bunch of ways to do the same thing, i would like to shed a bit of light into this dark corner , thanks for all the help
so, i need:
...to know the correct diagram to use.
...to check if it's doable, or i'll halt.
...if there are any caveats.
thanks.
let's see some picture of the beast:
its back
bottom, showing screws/stickers/warranty sticker
bottom warranty sticker [under a screw ¬¬]
its front, whoo
bottom side sticker.
thanks in advance for helping/reading, i really wanna get this thing started.

5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1. The DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader built into the flash and all the feature's you'd expect from a quality modchip, I recommend the DMS 4 SE Pro, because it has a 2MB flash built into the chip, and it's only about $10 more than the DMS 4 SE Lite. If you're interested in playing games off a HD, take a look at the DMS 4 Pro SE.
http://www.dms3.com/dms4se/features.html
The Matrix Infinity is the grandfather of auto boot modchips. It was the first modchip to auto boot backups/imports with no swapping/resetting. It's feature packed and simple to use. Matrix Chips are probably a little more durable than the other two, and extremely reliable. There are a lot of Matrix Infinity clones out there, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers listed in this thread.
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=chip_infinity
The Crystal Chip 1.1 is the latest contender to graduate to the top flight chip category. It is feature packed, simple to use, and effective. The CC auto patches DNA ID's so you'd never need to bother with Windip, Winimage, or Disc ID Insertor. Definitely recommended if you play your backups online alot. To boot backups/imports the Crystal Chip requires the use of "hacked" firmware. It's simply the official firmware modified so the chip can boot backups and imports. Everyone who uses the CC uses the hacked firmware, so fear not. The only feature that the CC doesn't share with the other two chips is support for cheat devices like ARMAX or Game Shark.
http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2#31 CC 1.1 Hacked Firmware v.19: http://www.forumconsolas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1213
I personally have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. I have no regrets as to getting a modchip over Swap Magic. Once you have a quality modchip, you'll never go back to disc swapping again. It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like. If you haven't noticed, most people who have trouble getting games to boot are Swap Magic users. This isn't nearly as frequent a problem for people who have modchips. Just some food for thought.
Note: v.12 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.
From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:
If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline v. 12 PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.
Laser fix info: http://www.modchip.com/ps2/v12laserfix.htm
Also be wary of this if you have a v.9 or 10 PS2, you will require what is known as a "Romeo Mod."
From KCC36630:
It's not really a DMS related mod, it is a V9/10 laser issue and is often refereed to by modders as 'Version 9/10 syndrome.'
As is the V9/10 has 12v driving the LA chip which feeds the focus coils for the laser. When scratched or low quality media is used the LA chip will feed a voltage to the focus coils. Anywhere from 0-12v (in an unmodded setup) and this voltage can cause coil burn out, damage to the LA chip from overheating, and even cause the ribbon cable to the laser (coils) to deteriorate which can lead to them shorting together and taking out the LA chip all together. The 'Romeo Mod' removes the 12v feed to the LA chip and replaces it with 5v. this is done by lifting pin 17 on the LA chip completely off the PS2s motherboard and soldering a 30 awg wire to the lifted pin and attaching the wire to any 5v source on the mobo.
One of the first tests on a V9/10 (prior to modding) that i do is to check the coil resistance, it should be 4.5-5 Ω each.
I think Xmodds.com ships anywhere.
26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition http://www.modchip.com and http://www.norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable. http://www.Xmodds.com is another quality mod site. If you're interested in a premod or modchip, be sure to order from one of these high quality sites.
40. Q. I have a middle school diploma, a bottle of Jack Daniels, and a soldering iron, should I solder my modchip myself?
A. C'mon. What do you think? Absolutely, unequivocally, definitely, without question, NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Unless you are an experienced solderer, don't go near your motherboard with a 10 foot pole. There's no quicker way to ruin a perfectly good PS2, than with a shot of JD and a soldering iron. Pay a Pro. It'll save you money down the road. http://www.teammodders.com is a good place to start.
23. Q. What version is my PS2?

Yes it is a nice copy and paste, because I copied and pasted it from my PS2 FAQ. I don't know, look around for differences in your version motherboard. If any chips are compatible with your vPS2 mobo, it would most likely be the DMS 4 Pro SE or Matrix Infinity (Green Dot). You'd obviously want to verify that before committing to anything.

Nope your version PS2 is either too foreign or new. I don't know any sites offhand. But hey you're willing to learn right? Search around on Google, you'll probably find some info. Cheers!

eheheheheheh :)
as i said, i can do some serious soldering and even made a bunch of casemods including lcds and those perky parallel-port things... analyzing the size of the points it seems easy, i've saw a ps2 being modded in front of me and the guy really wasn't using a golden soldering iron with a silver tip or anything extremely strange, just a damn R$15 (about USD8) iron [dms3 , went great]
now i'm really in Japan where NO ONE wants to play imports , people here are already in the mecca of gaming , and they have it on their local language [must rock] ... so there are no professionals, no modchip stores, no nothing, and once i've tried to speak about MODCHIPS and received a big 'DAMEEE' answer (FORBIDDEN!) ... they really don't have it at all, if a game scratches or breaks, they buy other, it's reasonably cheap down here...and about imports...they don't care...
so, with my small but proven soldering experience AND my curiosity, i'll HAVE to do this :-)
PS: did you note the small 'b' on the bottom sticker? that puzzled me....at least if that could be used to identify my board [other Vx PSes were identified by a small 'a' ....if only the NeoAsic guys posted the photos of SCPH-75000SSS [Satin Silver] they've got...i could compare the stickers and other things
about google: googled it all ... not even a damn answer...goggling 75000CB gives me the original Sony site *in japanese and really with no relevant information at all* and some eBay's ... this must be the newest model here....
NeoAsic guys told on the review that the SCPH-75000SSS mobo is identical to the US 75001 mobo...so i could've gotten my answer now if i got down for silver, but i was simply dying for -charcoal black-'s style :P gotta wait a bit more :)
btw, about those 'Laser Fixes' ? is it needed on V14's ? my unit can play DVD+-R/RW's with ease, i've burned a DVD-R with some anime [dvd format] ...plays nicely ...and used a DVD+RW with 1 hour and half of video...watched perfectly....no hips...no gags....perfect and with quick seeking, DVD+RW looked like original media :)
that's good right?

The v.14 doesn't need a laser fix. Trying to find a chip in Japan, that's tough. I've been told Xmodds.com ships all over the world, you may want to check em out. You'll want to avoid using DVD+RW's with your PS2. They wear down the laser very quickly. Use quality DVD+/-R's like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. You're in Japan, so it can't be hard to find Taiyo Yuden's. :) If you use DVD+R's, it helps to booktype them to DVD-ROM if your burner supports booktyping/bitsetting. This a very specific issue with your motherboard, that's why I didn't provide more info. Look around and talk to some modders. As long as it's a v.14, I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible with the DMS 4 Pro SE or Matrix Infinity. Those are the chips you should look into. Once you find out your mobo is 100% compatible with those chips, then it's time to find a modder. Contact xmodds and see if he'll ship out there. He's a member of this site (so PM him) or you can track him down thru his site.

nice, thanks
i belive it's a v14 coz it has the same model as the other v14's checked by NeoAsic.... SCPH-7500XXXX
but they found 2 different mobos on those....the Ceramic White has a motherboard a lot different from anything , but it's indeed a v14 with things in new positions....
i'll just have to wait and see if mine is one of those types ...or worse...a third v14 jap board type? o_O
btw, thanks for all your support, i've checked in other forums and only got help from AfterDawn's , nice that these things still work in a world like that
btw , do you have IM ?
PM me for ICQ/MSN/Jabber/IRC places i hang
thanks for all your help

No prob. I've been to other forums that will remain nameless *cough Ps2nfo.com cough* and most of the people on those sites don't know jack compared to the high end people on this site. Hopefully you can find out about your mobo for sure and get a chip. Hell you have a legit reason and all, it's not like you can import games and play them on an unmodded PS2. I have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. The DMS 4 Pro SE is a little more feature packed, either of those are great chips. I don't really do the chat thing much, thanks for the offer though. Cheers!
