I have a nec 2510a firmware 2.18 ,and it does not support dvd+r booktype to dvd-rom. I was looking to buy a plextor px-740a, Does it support dvd+r to dvd-rom? If not which burner does?

I strongly recommended benq1640. I am using benq 1620 for about 3 year now I suppose with update firmware and so far I got no burning problems with good dvd media like verbratim taiyo yuden or maxell. All are well burned with excellent quality. Benq 1640 are all set to booktype dvd-rom automatically. The only thing you need to do is to update to the latest firmware. I heard some bad comments about plextor burner and sony esp.

A Plextor 740A is a rebadged BenQ 1640, however it will not booktype unless you use a program DVD InfoPro. The BenQ drive comes with its own suite and will booktype, this suite will not work with the Plex. If you want to booktype you can also look at Lite-on drives or LG.

Edit: I own two Plextor 716A and they are true Plextor and booktype, they burn fantastic and there are no problems with the drive. Just added to say that Plextor drive are good.

Hi Pete,

Somehow I knew you would step in and stand up for plex's. I've never owned one but have heard only good things about the 712's and 716's. I do have a litey 1653 and benq 1620 pro and both have booktyping utilities in which you can make a setting in the drives eeprom to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom or you can use other burn utilities to do it for you eg. DVD Decrypter, Nero, dvdinfopro. I however prefer their own utilities. Set it and forget it.

Hi Marty,

I could not let a slight go by on my beloved Plex. I do agree there are plenty of good drives out there I have BenQ and Litey and both work well. Even for the short time I had the Plex 740 I enjoyed that drive even though I ended up using DVD InfoPro to get it to booktype. But once set with that program I never had to touch it again and the drive burned great, of course it was a BenQ so it should. But I agree setting and forgetting is the way to go.
