Hiya.

I have a bit of a problem with my above listed setup. Everything works fine except for import (NTSC) PSX games, original or backup. I bought Xenogears to play on my newly modded PS2 (which runs DVDs, backup/original PS2 titles, and original/backup PAL PSX games fine), but unfortunately it doesn't seem to want to boot. I took it to a friend's to see if it was my discs but they worked fine on his modded PS1..

Just to reiterate, my setup is this:

PAL V14 Slimline PS2
DMS4 Pro S.E Modchip (fitted professionally)

And I've tried ToxicOS 0.41, ToxicOS 0.4, and ToxicBIOS 0.4, all with teh same problem. Within the BIOS/OS settings, I've tried almost everything I can think of under a guy from the dms4 boards' suggestions - although I didn't understand why the PS2 Video Settings would effect the PSX. The Video Fix for PSX doesn't seem to make any difference either. I've also tried various boot modes - fast boot, ToxicOS boot, normal boot, booting normal without the disc in, then booting through browser, etc.

Of course, it might help if I explain the actual problem - It goes black, as if loading the PSX game, then the screen on my TV flickers twice (as it does when changing from PAL to NTSC - I see this every time I play an import PS2 game, which work fine), then nothing. No SCEA/Plasyation logo, no signs of life, no sound. The disc does keep spinning in the drive, but the loading (laser movement) sounds stop. Black screen. I've tried both Xenogears original and backup (I made a copy especially to see if that might work), and Final Fantasy Tactics original.

I've made sure PAL PSX games are working fine too - Final Fantasy IX (both original and backup) work flawlessly.

So after much fiddling around, burning about 5 different BIOS CDs (including the DMS4 originals to try those - but they don't detect my modchip because it's an SE - if someone could point me to the SE BIOS it'd be appreciated), burning copies of my Final Fantasy IX and Xenogears, the guy suggested altering my CD's potentiometer. Although I'm not exactly a dumbass when it comes to electronics, I'd rather not risk my brand new PS2's life by fiddling with something so sensitive, and I don't really see any logical reason why this would be the problem, given that the thing boots backup PAL games, original PAL games, CD PS2 games, DVD PS2 games, etc.

[/long post]

Thanks very much for being patient enough to read this far, I know I've dragged on a bit, but I wanted to try and describe the problem fully...

I'm wondering if anyone's got any more suggestions of stuff to try, or if anyone has experienced the same problem and might know anything about it. I've heard that ToxicOS 0.2 is better for PSX games.. any info on this? I've also heard it doesn't work on V14's though, which would be a crying shame if my problem is some bug in Toxic 0.4/0.41. Can anyone confirm this?

Does anyone agree/disagree with me on the pots thing? Is it worth me trying it, as I'd really love to play this game on my PS2, and can't really think of anything else to try myself, unless there's some alternate BIOS I can try or something..

If you have any more questions about my setup, please don't hesitate to ask as I'm really desparate for help, and would wholly appreciate anything you can offer.

Thanks in advance for any help, everyone!

How are you burning your backup of Xenogears? Is there an option in Toxic OS to support NTSC/PAL PSX backups? You should be using Toxic OS v.41. That's the most current release, and that's what the DMS 4 Pro SE is designed to run off of. I tested my backup of Xenogears. It works perfectly with my Matrix Infinity. Of I course I have the NTSC version with an NTSC PS2. My PAL PSX backups run flawlessly as well. Try different media, burn speeds and burning software.

Hmm... thanks for the reply.

I'm not too bothered about playing burned games just yet - I'd rather take it one step at a time and get the original (official) game working first (because that has the same problem).

I started off with ToxicOS 0.41, and have fiddled around trying various different versions... none of them do the job.

I should've really tested it with the default BIOS before upgrading to ToxicOS, because now I don't know whether it's Toxic causing the problem or that my chip isn't fitted right.. which wold be annoying, because it means sending the PS2 back to the place I bought it and doing all that jazz.

ToxicOS has only one PSX related option - PSX Video Fix - and it doesn't make any difference.

Try condensing your post down some in the future, most people are put off by three paragraph posts. You definitely want to run Toxic OS with the DMS 4 Pro SE. I doubt that's the problem. I also doubt it's poorly fitted since this is the only game you seem to have issues with. You could try backing up the game on some quality CD-R's and see if that helps.

I also have the problem with Final Fantasy Tactics (NTSC).. should I try some more NTSC games? I have about 3 more somewhere - Gex, The Lion King and Final Fantasy IX.

I'll try backing up on some quality media, though it would be nice to be able to have originals working too. Thanks.

Yeah try your other original games. If none of them work, maybe it's a loose wire or something.

sorry i haven't been around the boards much other then just threads I'm subscribed to and i hate to be the bringer of the bad news but.........

Currently the PS1 game video fix is not functional while using ToxicOS with a V14 console. This will be fixed in a future release.

we were all expecting a new flash with up to V16 support when the site came back online, but no such luck, seams they just forgot to pay the ISP bill :)

Hmm... no luck with other NTSC games, or backups either, and I tried using some verbatim discs to back up just to see - no luck there either.

Looks like I'll have to wait for the next ToxicOS release, and hope that solves the problem ;P

there is no guarantee they'll have the V14 or later PSX format issue fixed in the next release but hopefully they will. until that time people with these consoles will have to stick to games of their format (NTSC/Pal) or patch the game.

If you're interested in patching:

You'd need to download the patch: http://www.megagames.com/psx/psx_patches.shtml

Then you patch it with PPFomatic: http://www.megagames.com/psx/psx_ppf.shtml#PPF-O-Matic

Then you burn it to CD-R with CDRWIN: http://goldenhawk.com/

PPF and CDRWIN tutorial: http://www.go.to/psxcplist

Sorted - I used Gamester to change the territory code.

It isn't a video issue after all -- it's the chip not being able to get around the PSX region lockout. Yay.
