This is an option under the burn settings tab after you have clicked backup. It says DVD+R/RW High Compatibility Mode.

Do I leave this unchecked if I am using DVD-R and not +? Or what exactly is the point of this. I am new to this and just trying to work out all the kinks in my settings before burning large quantities for backups.

The book-type option is only enabled for those burners which support setting the book-type. The "burn at least 30mm" option ensures that at least 1GB is written to the target disc, which can help some players to recognise the burned media. Since your typical compilation size is 4464MB, this is not usually an issue, and checking the option will make no difference in this case. If you make really small DVDs (as I often do for testing) then I recommend checking this option
Just leave it uncheked. You don't have to worry about it.
