You do a disk defrag once every 6 monthes, it will take about 10 hours so do it over night :)

What does defragging actually do apart from speed your computer up?

Defragging puts all the bits and pieces back where they are supposed to be after you've demolished them...LOL

@ LOCOENG

Very good link regarding defragging.

While it explains the basic process, aren't Symantecs and Windows results opposite of each other? I mean, I seem to remember that Symantec puts the most frequently used programs on the outer part of the disk so that it is read faster. Outside working towards the inside. While Windows works from the inside to the outside.

@ jjssj - Some of your links did not take me to what I expected. Especially the Raxco one. I guess I have a phobia about providing so much info to a company/product previously unknown to me. I am not trying to discourage you from helping fellow computer users with that remark. Keep the "Help others" mentality. I might suggest using images that are not your working computer. They may contain hints for hackers.

If a current set-up works for you, regardless of your goals or expectations, keep it. Experimenting is fine. That is how we learn. Just remember how to get back to square one when it comes to computers.

I agree it is good to do a defrag but I would suggest letting windows tell you when it is necessary by clicking on it?s analysis feature every so often to see when it would recommend one. Then schedule a defrag accordingly. The days of 1 gig HDD?s and 33 or 66 ATA?s are a thing of the past. Most people can barely see the difference between ATA133 drives and SATA 150?s or even SATA Raptor?s. If you want to really see notable speed differences go to a 16MB cache HDD or a Raptor.

I agree scubabud, a daily defrag seems like overkill...if you are a heavy user I think once a week would be sufficient, if not more infrequently.

I got Diskeeper professional, now it just defrags in the background/doesn't take up CPU. I'm happy
