i converted an avi movie to vob etc files using winavi, then used nero to burn them. at first i used imation disks burned at 4x. the movie would skip when played on my cyberhome but wouldn't when played on my pc. someone told me that the disks are the problem, so i converted to sony dvd+r's. however these discs allow a minimum of 6x burning speed and i get the same skipping problems (again, only on my cyberhome) what's the problem here? is it just my standalone? i haven't tried any other dvd players, can someone recommend a reliable one (albeit, not too expensive...). any advice would be greatly appreciated :) .
I think you are on the right track. But I wonder if it is a possibility that the errors which are causing skipping on the Crappy Media (Imation, Memorex, etc... and the list goes on), may have been transfered to the "ok" discs (Sony). I personally have many movies backed up on Sony Disc, and I sometimes run into trouble. But generally, they are ok. I now use Verbatim. They are rated among the best.
Maybe what you should do, is first try the sony disc on another player, to determine if the problem is indeed the disc or the player. If it is the disc, Instead of copying directly from one disc to another, create an image of the disc on your hard drive with DVD Shrink. Even better, would be to start right back with the original. Tell it to create an iso image. Then burn the iso image as a Booktype File, if your burner has the capibilities. This is of course, using +R Media.
So you end product would be an Iso image, burned on a +R DVD as a Booktype File.
Booktyping a file will make it more user friendly with almost all stand alones.
And one more thing, Do Not use Paper Stick On Labels. That will also cause skipping!
Walmart has a DVD player for $60. It is what I use in all my rooms. I bought 3 of them with the price you cant beat it. It plays anything I throw at it and if you read the specs you will also see it will play AVI files. (DivX, Xvid) without even converting it to DVD. I uasly will place 4 to 6 AVI files on 1 DVD and they play like a charm. Below is a link to the item at wal-mart.
What burner did you use and have you updated it to the latest firmware? Also, run the disc through dvdinfopro and do a scan. I would make sure your firmware is up to date first. If it's not the firmware it's most likely a media issue. Weather it be bad media or a compatability of your burner with the media.
Thanks for the great advice everyone. I decided to just buy that DVD player. Now I'm playing AVI files, no problem! This site is great and you guys (and girls) are tops!
