My onkyo dv-sp301 dvd player recently broke (continuos reading disc errors) I am looking to purchase a new dvd player and am looking for suggestions as to which to buy that would be best compatible with my system and give me the best sound and video for movies.

I have onkyo tx-sr500 receiver with Bose acoustimass 10 speaker system (i know most of you guys don't like bose but i bought them a couple of years a go and am stuck with them)

I mainly use my HTS for watching dvd movies and am looking to spend about $200.
I have a regular 36" toshiba TV but will be going to plasma or lcd in the near future.

Thanks

Hi Burbon! If you're new to afterdawn, I'd like to say welcome! I'd like to tell you about a DVD player I recently bought and with which I'm really impressed...love the thing and $200.00 is what it costs. It is an "Oppo OPDV971H" although they've just replaced it with a new model. It has a HD upconverter which will push your picture to 1080i and it is an astounding picture. The upconverter signal requires DVI or HDMI which it your system at the moment won't support but if you're planning to get a HD plasma or LCD, most will have DVI and/or HDMI and not just component.

My home theater is my baby and I paid a fortune for it. I was prepared to spend a hell of a lot more than $200 on my DVD player. A buddy here on aD told me of a different model with an upconverter but it had been discontinued. I started reading reviews about the Oppo OPDV971H because of the similarities. I suggest you go into google and read the reviews for it yourself. One negative you'll read in the reviews is that the remote sucks and it sure does but they all went on and on about how astonishing the picture was etc. So, rather than sing its praises here, just go and read reviews for yourself. When you first get it, I guess the pic won't make any exceptional impression but if it your plan to get an HD television, you're in for a big surprise...again though, TV would need DVI or HDMI input. Here I was ready to spend three times what this cost and I couldn't be more satisfied. I think the reviews will impress you as it did me.
