in summory
why should/would i use iso ifo file
do i use iso mode if i want to run say VOB blanker after ripping???

ISO mode rips the disc into an ISO image file. So everything is all in one file.

File mode rips the disc into individual files. The result is a VIDEO_TS folder and AUDIO_TS folder. the audio folder is empty and the video has three different kinds of files inside...VOB(Video OBject file), IFO(InFOrmation file), and BUP(BackUP file).

The above two are the most common and there is no real advantage of one over the other. Although it has been my experience that rips in file mode error out less than iso mode rips. But I haven't used shrink in a long time so that point may be invalid these days. VOB blanker needs a file mode rip.

IFO mode rips only the IFO files. The rips from this mode are used by some programs like dvd to avi converters. So you probably won't need it.

Hope this is what you were wanting to know...

No, I use DVD Decrypter in file mode, then with VobBlanker I edit ads, warnings, and some trailers out, and a few other items I won't go into at this time. I can cut out about 1-3GB out of the entire DVD, so when I go to burn with Recode2 there is very little compression.

As a general rule: neither File mode nor ISO mode is necessarily "better." However, the choice often depends on what you plan to do next with the ripped files.

I tend to use File mode MOST of the time, and this is because so many other programs can open a collection of files if it is ripped this way. This includes several software programs that I use regularly.

ISO mode (as mentioned above) creates one massive file, which then is actually a "disc image" that contains everything inside of it. Think of a "bucket" of sorts, which then does have all of the necessary files and the accompanying structure inside of it.

I use ISO mode in one situation, though, always... if I am planning on burning the results back onto a blank dual layer disc. The reason is simple. DVDDecrypter in ISO mode will create a second small file which contains the original layer break information, so that this is not lost. This can be be very important when you go to burn it. This situation is perfect if I am not going to do any editing, or any re-auhoring, or additional compressing, and I just want a perfect "bit-for-bit identical backup" of the original, exactly was it was. In such cases, I use this procedure:

-DVDDecrypter to rip, in "ISO READ R" mode.
-DVDDecrypter (or Imgburn) to burn, in "ISO WRITE W" mode.

=====

In all other cases, my personal preference is to rip in "File mode," because I know that so many of the other programs can then easily open the files for any additional work I wish to do.
