I did a search for this subject but couldnt find anything. I have a BenQ DW1640 drive that has been working great! I have been burning Verb MCC 004's in the drive flawlessly for about 4 months now. Recently, I have noticed that every disk I burn has 2 perfectly circular rings in the burned area of the disk. I understand these are due to write speed changes? The discs still play fine - no freezes, pixelation, etc and they scan fine as well(95-97% using CDSpeed). I have tried both settings for WOPC in Solidburn, never use overburn, but still get the rings. Is this something I should be worried about? A sign my drive is going bad?
Any comments or experience with this would be appreciated!
while i have encountered these "rings" you speak of on very FEW Taiyo Yudens, i have seen them...i guess if you really look that closely on the recorded surface and see rings, that COULD be due to your burner "creating" these rings during the burn...
it COULD be a slew of factors WHY the rings appear...the backups you have made on TY with these so called "rings", does it affect the playback? are they "coasters"? do you get pixellation/freezing/skipping or other burn related problems approximately at the time the rings begin on the disc?
these "rings" could also be a result of your burner either losing or gaining momentum in the course of the burn...it has nothing to do with how "hot the laser" is, but the rotational speed of the disc during the burn is NOT always consistent...if you are burning ReALLY fast, say at 16x, your burner doesn't ACTUALLY burn @16x the ENTIRE WAY from beginning to end...it usually obtains TRUE 16x speed burn towards the end/edge of the disc...starts slower naturally, then spools up and gets faster...
MOST of my TY burns are a solid "purpleish" color from hub to edge of disc, while i've noticed a FEW with the "rings", they did NOT affect the final product, there was no issues during playback...but, that is only ME...
i'm sure other members will have different opinions as to WHY the rings are there or if they are "normal" or not to a certain degree...you have MY OPINION on the matter, don't know what else i can really say about these "rings" :)
docTY~
p.s. do you see these "rings" ONLY on Taiyo Yuden media? or is it apparent with other media you have tried too? on the same burner i'm assuming...
if you see the rings on other brands of media and this is having an adverse affect on your backups, then it MIGHT be time to look for a new burner or have your burner's lens cleaned or maintainenced...
