I'm a newbie with a capital N. Please excuse me if I don't use the correct terms. We've had our new computer less than a week and I'm trying to learn (with the help of this forum) how to back up our DVDs.
From everything I've read here (and after throwing out over 20 ruined DVDs), I believe I have to booktype our DVDs. I've followed guides posted and linked here and I think I've found why our Toshiba DVD player freezes. It reads DVD-R (again, I don't know the correct terms, such a novice).
Our burner is HL-DT-ST-DVD Rom GDR816-48. We bought TDK brand DVD+R blanks.
Using this guide: http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
I'm fine until I get to the "Change Book Type" page -- we don't have one of the brands of burners listed...
Can someone please tell me how to proceed from there? It says to click OK, if you don't know what you're doing, but that doesn't allow me to start burning.
I freely admit to being ignorant about all this, I truly am a "new"bie. I appreciate any help ~ thank you!

First, you can only booktype DVD+R media(which you probably know). Second ,the playback issue it is usually related to media quality, burn speed, multitaksing during burn process. What DVD-R did you use and at what speed do yu burn? TDK is not very highly regarded. I would buy TY, Verbatims or Sony-Fuji-maxell MIj. Your player could be okay with DVD-R. booktyping helps with compatibility. If your player would not be compatibile with the mediayou burn onto,, I don't think it would necessarily freeze or skip, but would entirely not read the disc. You would get a message like "Disc Unknown" or " Bad Disc", or "Unknown Format" or something like that.

If your burner is not capable of booktyping then you cannot do it. I have Toshiba player and it only plays -R format, so up until I got a burner that would booktype I used the -R media. Try using -R media and see if you still have problems.

Thank you both so much for responding.
cyprusmom ~ Thank you for the explanations in your post. The blanks I'm using are TDK brand DVD+R (is that what you're asking me?) I've been burning at 4x speed (as per recommendations here I've read). So then if I understand your post correctly - I should simply get a better quality of media? I do not multitask during this process. I do however remain connected to the internet and do not disable our screensaver, I've read some folks do - in your opinion should I disconnect and disable the s'saver?
On the front of our burner, one of the symbols has RW and under it, DVD+R DL -- so I literally assumed I had to buy DVD+R blanks? (well, that and my 17 year old neighbor told me to - ha!)
---
arniebear ~ Again, thank you for your help. I will take your and cyprusmom's advice and buy a high quality -R blank and try it again.
I have so many questions -- After I make my copy and take it to my DVD player to play, is it alright to hit the >>>>> fast forward button and zoom through it - then, if it makes it through to the end without stopping/freezing, can I assume that it made a good copy? Is this the best way to test out the copy to see if it's okay?

Your burner supports DVD-R, that's a given with any burner, first to come out were DVD-R. That is why ir doesn't say DVD-R.It says DVD+R DL because not all burners support that kind of media, but yours does. is like buying pizza; not on all pizza's will say "Cheese Pizza", unless is extra chees! Pizza without cheese, is no pizza, that's why is not mentioned! The same with DVD-R. But, if you want to add some extra canadian Bacon or sausage( DVD+R(RW) DL!), than you have to let the customer know what you're selling!
As for the second question about forwarding/good burn, I would say no. You can still have some freezing parts in the movie.

What program are you using, Nero, Decrypter and ImgBurn all have a verify function. I have never zoomed through a video to test it out, so I don't know if this would work being that it is just a fast forward at a higher rate than the disk would normally be played. And if there is any pixelation I doubt if you would notice. As far as your booktyping, your burner is supposed to by a rebadgec LG burner. As far as I know LG does support booktyping, look in K-probe and see if LG is listed and try and see if this will work.

TDK DVD-R media is average where as TDK DVD +R genereally codes out as CMC i.e., Memorex code and is not usually very good. Be sure to try better media.

You're all being patient with me and I appreciate it - thank you.
cyprusmom ~ thank you for the explanation, it was written so that I could understand it (smile).
So the best way to see if the copy was a success it to view the entire movie at regular speed? Does everyone do this with every copy they make? Or as arniebear suggests - use the verify section of Decrypter? (I realize my questions are so basic!)
arniebear ~ I am using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink 3.2. Is the verify section on Decrypter something I would use to see if I made a good copy then? If so, is there a guide I can search for to show me how to do this?
billbo ~ We're on our way to the store to buy one of the brands cyrpusmom suggested.
Again - I'm so appreciative of everyones' help. Thank you all. I've done searches and have been reading here for 3 days now. I hope I'm not asking questions that have already been answered, I have been using the search function.

Using Decrypter in iso write mode, just check the box and then start.
I usually do not watch my backups for sometime after I have done them, but that is because I have trust in my media, burner and process. After you have done a few and viewed them you will too.

You will not find Tayio Yuden under Tayio Yuden brand name in the store. they usauly are under Fuji or Sony made in Japan. verbatim is made in Taiwan, so don't look for MIJ verbs( unless you are from Englad?).
If you live in the states, try Office max, Best Buy, Sams Club. I found good sales in these stores.

Best Buy has a 50 pack of Sony on sale for 14.99, you can check for the MIJ. Office Max has a 50 pack of Verbatim on sale for 14.99 these are very good media.

Thank you cyprusmom and arniebear ~ We went to Best Buy to check out the Sony discs, but they stated they were MIT, so we passed on them (?) and went over to Office Max and bought the Verbatim -R.
I successfully finished the first movie and played it (regular speed - ha) all the way through with no glitches. (sigh of relief!)
Now I'm trying to decrypt my copy of Wedding Crashers, using DVD Decrypter. All is fine until the end, after it's finished decrypting and following these instructions:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup%20with%20Decrypter&Shrink.pdf
When I get to steps 19 & 20, 19. "Click on Mode, then ISO then Write W. 20. Make sure your burner is selected as the destination and select your write speed ...
When I do step 19, the destination bar automatically goes to, "No Writers Detected." When it happened the first time, I deleted the files and ran it again. The same thing happened this time.
Can anyone help? I hope I'm not asking too many questions - I really am learning this from level 0, but I'm so encouraged by my previous success with the new DVDs. Thanks again!!

Nice job on those Verbs. For Sony, although the ones MIT are still good, if you want to find the ones MIJ you have to search through the spindels. They can be mixed.
Now, how did you burn the previous movie? It shloud be a similar process.
For "Wedding Crashers" though, instead of DVD Decrypter you might need DVD Fab Decrypter(free). The latter is more up to date with the decryption algoritms.
here is a guide.: Nero-Recode-2.php" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.k-probe.com/backup-newly-release-DVD-DVDFAB-Decrypter-...
Instead of Nero, you can use DVD Shrink.

The movie I just finished successfully (When Harry Met Sally) was done following the same instructions from the link in my above post. I followed them the same, step by step.
Then I used DVD Shrink 3.2
Thank you for the recommendation of DVD Fab Decrypter - I will definitely try that.
Now - on the Sony discs at Best Buy. I was simply looking on the package's wrap, it stated MIT -- was I looking in the correct place? Then I just look through all the spindels and one might say MIJ? I ask because I've read here about things printed in the hub (which I couldn't see as it was covered up...)
Thank you so much. I feel so fortunate that you kind people are helping me out.

Yes, you have to look on the pakage wrap, sometimes is right next/above the code bar. If it said MIJ, is gotta be TY.
As for the code on the inner hub, that is more as an asurrance when you by online, to make sure you did not get some fakes.
You welcome. if you have any other questions, don't hesitate.
And don't get intimidated by VobBlanker method. all you have to do is click "Process"!
