Is there one single format of video that is compatible with all makes of portable video player, or at least most (incl. iPod)?

mp4 is probably the most common...and it is compatible with the iPod...but I couldn't safely say there is any format compatible with all pmp/pvp's..

Yes, my guess would have been mp4.

I've also heard that there are different DivX codecs that could pose problems depending on which device is being used - will I have to bear that in mind as well?

I ask this as I'm considering offering a DVD to mp4 conversion service, and it would be useful for me to only have to worry about one type of codec ( in an ideal world !!!).
