I have an SCPH-70012, v12. This is what I know....
If you use QUALITY media (like Taiyo Yuden), it will be as close to $ony media as you can get. This means less reads by the laser. Bad media = more reading to find the data. If you burn too fast, it can skew the data making the laser have to work harder. This is a well-documented FACT on both AfterDawn & CDfreaks.
You can take care of the laser by keeping dust off of it, and keeping it as cool as possible. With the PS2 closed, consider putting a small fan nearby to keep the heat down. I've heard of games becoming warped after 20hr marathon gaming session. Well...maybe in the Florida/Arizona heat but otherwise I think that's an urban legend. It does make sense to keep your PS2 cool, though. Don't try to wipe the laser using anything abrasive. 50% alcohol/water on a Qtip is better than using one of those CD laser cleaning kits. Why? The cleaning edge becomes abrasive after so many uses. Plus they're darn expensive. A Qtip will do it.
Everything else is common sense. Don't try to move the PS2 with a game/movie spinning inside. Don't drop it. Don't lend it out to people. LOL (i'm too busy playing mine) Anything that applies to electronics applies to the PS2. I use SwapMagic v3.6 with TY media, had not had any problems. Tokijin's FAQ in signature line is very helpful. Good luck.
