So, I installed a Matrix Infinity (which I can only assume is not a clone, because I bought it from divineo, the matrix team's "official usa reseller"). I triple-checked all connections, and I solder parts and wires to pcb for a living so I'm 99% sure I got it installed properly.

The thing is, I have a V12 PS2, which I keep reading are very iffy with the lasers. After I installed my chip, I have a very odd assortment of what will and will not be read by my console. I can read a CD-R (which I used to upgrade the firmware), but not a CD-RW (both verbatim, burned at 4x on a much higher rated drive). I can not read any original games for psx (the black discs). I CAN read an original PS2 CD (the purple discs). I can not read any original PS2 DVD discs. I can not read any original DVD movies. And I can not read any PS2 backups.

Granted, I haven't tried everything yet (PSX backups, for instance, considering that a CD-R was successfully run), but isn't it odd that it can read a CD-R but not an original black disc? Or that it can read an original purple CD, but not an original black disc or DVDs?

So, I'm curious if anyone knows if the coloring that sony uses on some of it's discs is known to make it harder to read? Do modchips usually result in a less effective laser somehow? Should I replace my laser, or possibly some other parts that control the laser to be on the safe side?

I'm also curious but hesitant about a USB hard drive alternative. Am I right that slim ps2's have no means other than usb to use a hard drive? And that game compatibility using usb extreme or usb advance is extremely low in any case?

Thanks in advance.

I doubt you got a clone chip from an official reseller. This is what the real MI looks like:

This is the green dot version. You may have a blue or orange dot, but aside from that it should be identical to this pic. Maybe it's a loose wire or bad flash. From the official MI Firmware v.1.68 read me file: UPGRADING INFINITY:
-------------------

- Insert the burned CD into the PS2 and press reset.
The CD should boot automatically and you will be presented with the Upgrade sreen.
- Follow instructions on screen to upgrade Infinity.

**********************************************************************************

- NOTE : You can always recover from a bad flash by entering recovery mode.
==== This will let you boot the upgrade disc to reflash your Infinity.

To enter recovery mode:

V1-V12 and V14 PAL :
====================

Hold the reset button until the blue eject light turns on.

V14+ USA and JAP
================

USA : Hold reset until blue eject lights turn on, wait 3 seconds and
tap reset again.

JAP : Hold reset until blue eject lights turn on, wait 3 seconds and
tap reset, wait 3 more seconds and tap reset again.

No, I believe it is a good chip as well. It looks exactly like that, green dot and all. The firmware seems to have been correctly flashed as it now shows 1.75 as it's version. I'm going to triple check my wire connections later, but I highly doubt that is the problem.

It seems so odd to me that it can read from and boot a CD-R of the firmware, read from and boot a PS2 CD (purple disc), but only read and not boot from a PSX CD (black disc). I have to believe that the black discs must be pretty inferior quality or that the coloring somehow makes it harder to read.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking that my situation is too vague to really get much help from any message boards. Guess I just need to keep experimenting.

I have had no problems with Divineo at all. They sell the products as seen on their website. They give specific names for the chips, like NH9 and Modbo v2.1 instead of "Matrix Infinity Clone".

I got many chips from Divineo and they work fine. I installed a modbo2.1 on the slim ps2 few days ago and worked great without any troubleshooting, though it didnt have a config menu like i thought it would have, since it copied the Matrix Infinity.

IMO, it could be the connection problems. could be the GND or power wire being too long. I have had this problem with many of my previous installations. The chips would only work after the GND wire was shortened.

You can also check the M N O P Q T U V R points (bios). Tips say the R point has to be kept short.
