either these days , it doesn't really matter at all

the best dye on either + or - media is Taiyo Yuden (just for future reference)

It all depends on what burner model you have.

Some have the ability of bitsetting. This is also known as booktyping. Drives like benq/plextor/Lite-on/LG/Nu-tech/ricoh/and some sonys like the Dru-700/710/800 have this capability.You may have to use certain burn programs or utilities. Drives like pioneer and NEC need special,hacked firmware,but can booktype. A lot of other drives out there can't.

This booktyping is only performed by capable burners and using the plus format only. The dash format cannot be booktyped. This booktyping makes it look like your backups are dvd-rom format,the most universally compatable format. Some of those picky players may like the plus or dash format/both/or none. This booktyping actually gives you a third format.

If you don't know which ones to try,just list the brand name and model# of your burner.

Stick with the quality media like herbsman posted. Taiyo yuden and Verbatim are the top dogs using very good quality advanced metal azo dye. The quality media can save you from a slew of issues,not only burning successfully,but playback on stand alone players/pc drives/and game consoles.

My DVD is lite-on 1693. I'm not really sure what you meant by booktyping though

now i take dvd +r because they don't freeze the movies. in my case, dvd -r froze the movies around 1 hour 20 something min. in the movie!!!!

Here is a link that will explain the process of bitsetting or booktyping that saugmon was talking about. If your drive will allow it, it certainly should be what you want to do.
