I'm dual booting right now on my laptop with Ubuntu and Xp. I've installed Ubuntu on a different comp and don't want it on my laptop anymore. How can I delete the Linux Partition and use it for storage space through xp?
I've tossed some ideas around but the thing that is concerning me most is if I delete linux how will windows load since grub boot loader is what is allowing me to load either linux or xp. If I remove linux the grub will be gone as well. Will windows the boot loader know to take over?
Should this be in the linux forum as well so the Penguins see it too ;) ?

That depends on wether you put grub in the linux partition, on a floppy, or in your MBR.

In ubuntu, check the contents of your linux partitions, if grub isn't there, it will be in your MBR.
And getting it out of there isn't a fun job...

I'll do that. If its not in there how much fun is it going to be? I've already been tossing around the idea of doing a clean install over the entire drive with new partitions. So if its uber hard I'll go with the clean install

Well, i'd personally go with using a partition manager, wiping out the entire disc, and then doing a clean install (that being the easiest way)

By using a partition manager are you speaking of something other than the one thats built into the xp install?

If I use partition magic before the install to set up my partitions during the installation process xp will recognize these preset partitions?
What is the advantage to using this rather than doing it during the installation process?

Well, windows will clear the partitions, but i don't think it will clear out the MBR (might be wrong on that though, not sure)

Does Partition Magic run off a disc then? You run that live and partition everything the way you want it and continue with the windows installation?

Yeah, you just insert the cd, run it, then exit.
Pop in the windows cd, and your done.

I'll give her a go as soon as I get all my stuff backed up.
Is Partition Magic Freeware?

It appears Dan is gone. Does anyone else know anything about my problem. I did go into my linux partitions and found a folder named boot and grub was in there... So if I unmount these partitions and format them...will windows be able to boot?

In theory, yes, but since we are talking about windows, you can never be 100% sure.
