ILO dvdr05 not formatting DVD +R

I have tried both TDK and HP DVD +Rs and the ILO will format maybe 1 in 25-30. I have no trouble with playback but I want to record a ton of soccer matches on the 3 (yes THREE) soccer channels i have.

Any suggestions? Is there a software program out there I can format DVDs on my TDK burner with my laptop?
Any better brands of DVD Rs?
