Hi i used dvdsanta tp encode an avi file and i burned it with dvdsanta also at 8x. The movie worked excellent in my computer dvd rom. On my playstation2 console the first half of the movie works with sound and then the audio dies out leaving only just the moving video. Anybody knows why i'd really appreciate the help. Thank u.

use the program dvix to dvd. very great program, very easy to use.
use dvd +r instead of -r. because -r will probably freeze your movies.
good media that i didn't have problems with.
sony

dvd-r will not freeze your movies so long as it is good media, ps2's usually tend to prefer DVD-R as DVD+R can cause errors/skipping. use verbatim, taiyo yuden or sony (made in japan) discs. burn your media at 1/2 the drive/disc speed then your burns should be fine

no disrespect but DVD-R does not just freeze or no one would buy them, i have 100's of sucessful burns with DVD-R & not one freezes when burned correctly on good media. if you read the original post it says he has tried playing in his ps2, a lot of ps2's do not like DVD+R.
everyone has different experiences it may just be that your player didnt like the media brand/format

Actually i used a samsung DVD-R, but the point is that it worked on my computer dvd rom and worked well on my ps2 until half the movie then the audio dies out, doesn't that indicate that that it has good media. Or coukd it be because i burned it at 8x.

why don't you try to encode the same movie on a different brand of media and burn it at 4x. and play it on your ps2 again see if the problem still there..

lets go back a couple of steps and see if we can sort this.
Would you be able to download avicodec, run your file through it and copy and paste the file properties here so we can view them.
No one so far has addressed your question as to why?
Unless we know what your file is, what the source is, no easy solution will be forthcoming.
Media maybe a contributing factor but only slightly. You mention burning at 8x, thats your prorogative but at this stage you havent had a successful burn so lets just try at 4x 1st and once thats accomplished then up the speed level
Media is always an issue and even the best fail on occassion.Try using verbs/ritek/taiyo yuden or sonys for starters. You dont need to buy whole spindels but get a couple of each and work out which ones are going to work for you

There is another thing i forgot to mention, i don't know if it'll be of any relevance but the source was originally a two part movie and i joined them using VirtualDub 1.4.10
