Emulators off USB HDD?

Has anyone had any luck running any emulators off a USB HDD?

I can get SNES-Station to load after swap magic, but it says there are no roms, though i've tried placing the roms in about everywhere I can thing of to get them to show, but no luck.

Any ideas or anyone tried and had any luck?

I used a ps2 emulater once but it failed.
