The dvd you were looking at is dual layer.DVD-r is only single layer. As for reducing the vob quality check out DVD2one. This tool allows you to squeeze a movie over 4.7gb onto a dvd-r disk(4.7gb). The quality is ever so slightly reduced but to be honest its hard to tell.

hope this helps

I have yet to make absolutly sure but when I tried using DVD2one it gave me 2 vob files with only half the movie. Plus it only added 2 more minutes of video for every 1 Gig....What gives??

I jsut realized this...i am using the demo which limits to 30 mins....but that still doesnt explain how when I set it to a 4000mb dvd, it makes 1GB vobs only 20 mins long.....

Huh?

In fact DVD2One let me compress :

Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

...with hardly any discernable quality loss.

After this I'd go down with the sinking ship...LOL

You guys say that the reduction in quality is hard to notice but what kind of TV's are you playing your compressed DVD on? I have a digital rear projection and I bet you would notice the difference in quality big time. Tell me I'm wrong though if this is not the case.

Ye i guess a lot of quality would depend on the tv!

Buckshoot:
I watch the compressed (DVD2one) movies on a 70cm Widescreen TV set and cannot tell the difference from the original. Its great quality!!!

hk2npck:
DVD2one 1.1.1 full copy (after ripping ALL FILES with DVD decrypter/Smartripper) You will have the menu and all extra's !
