what is the most common reason for a PS2 - not modded to display "disk read error" when it is about to read original games? Thanks

From my experience, a dirty or dying laser lens. The early versions of PS2 (SCPH-30001) which are Versions 1-4, I believe, all used a different type of laser that wears out over time much quicker than the newer PS2 lasers... I believe it collects dust and other junk on it, in some cases. My friend has a V4 that he got about 3-4 years ago, we tried to clean the lens and nothing worked. Clean it if you want, but be extremely careful, you can just as easily put it out of comission for good.
