Hey, I've been a lurker at afterdawn for at least a year now, and finally registered today.

To get straight to my situation, I have a Version 7 SCPH-39001 that had a DMS4 Pro chip installed. Unfortunately, while it was working perfectly fine, about a week ago it took a fatal fall... literally, from about 6 feet in the air. The DVD drive was jammed, and the fan stopped working. I was able to fix the DVD drive myself and get it working fine, though after replacing the fan with a known-working fan, it still refuses to function (the fan). The console itself boots up fine, and can read from both memory card slots. It plays DVD movies, both regular and backup. However it doesn't play any of my normal games, only select burned ones, and this is with no functional fan, so it overheats about 15-20 minutes into gameplay, and shuts down.

After examining the situation, I figured that it might be advantageous to just purchase a new console, since this would be much easier than having it repaired, and for lack of any repair center near me. Plus I don't know if they'd repair a modded PS2.

So, that's the backstory. I'm going to purchase a Version 14 slimline PS2 (new) from the local Target, SCPH-75001. I've been reading that the DMS4 Pro doesn't work out of the box with it, and the new ToxicOS 0.41 must be flashed via memory card ELF onto it, in order for compatability with the Version 14 PS2. I figured that I would save myself the trouble, since I'm not familiar with getting ELF's onto a PS2 memory card, and flash the new OS now, which luckily worked. I'm going to have this same DMS4 Pro chip reinstalled into my Version 14. Will I need to re-flash the OS, or will it work fine in a new console? Also, if I do need to re-flash once in the v14, will that work from the CD since 0.41 is already on the chip, or will I still need to flash from memory card?

Also, I read that the slimline laser goes bad easily, though in another thread ( http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/297602 )Tokijin says that v13 and v14 and up do not need the laser adjustment, and that his FAQ would be updated with that. On the FAQ, however, it says

"If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded v.12 slimline PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play. "

I'm assuming that the FAQ just wasn't updated and that applies to v12 only?

Sorry for being a bit of a longwinded post, but I want to make sure I'm able to do everything properly before setting this into motion. Feedback is much appreciated. Thanks in advance, guys.

I'll let Tokijin know, I'll get him to take a look at this thread.

Correct. There is no need to get a laser fix with a v.13 and 14 PS2. Some modders will preflash the chip with Toxic OS for you, if not flashing it is a snap. I updated my FAQ to that effect as far as I'm aware. Use these instructions to flash the chip.

104. Q. I can't get my DMS 4, Matrix Infinity, or Crystal Chip 1.1 to boot backups/imports, what's going on?
A. You need to flash the chip with the latest firmware to boot backups and imports.
DMS 4 Pro SE or Pro: http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=3138141
DMS 4 Lite or Lite SE: http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=8823396
Crystal Chip 1.1 Hacked Firmware: http://www.forumconsolas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1213
Matrix Infinity: http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=news

Note: There are a ton of Matrix Infinity Clones out there. If you flash a Matrix Infinity clone with the official MI firmware, you'll fry the clone chip. That's a little gift from the Matrix Team to you for not researching and making sure you got a legit MI. After reading this FAQ, there's no excuse for ending up with a MI Clone.
Use Alcohol 120% to burn the bin file to CD-R.

Alcohol 120%: http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_120_

Burn the Firmware to CD-R with these instructions:
1. Unzip the firmware.
2. Insert your blank disc.
3. Open Alcohol 120%.
4. Go to File-->Open and browse to the cue file. Double click it.
5. Once it's open under Alcohol 120%, right click the cue file and click image burning wizard.
6. Select your recorder, leave the write method alone, set the write speed to 4x, set the datatype to PS2, and click next
