Sounds like a DMA issues to me. Are you a Win XP user? If so, then check/click on the link under my sig (How to Enable DMA back On) to troubleshoot your DMA's drivers or to uninstall them.
Out of curiosity, what kind of movie/title are you trying to rip? Maybe it has the latest junks/protections from RipGuard or ARccOS and therefore, it takes forever.
For a free ripper (ripping tool), I highly recommend you to get the latest from DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.7.2 or higher when it updates to rip the movie into your hard drive. Ripping the movie to hard drive is the best and safest way to go. You can ask any advanced user(s)/knowledgeable members here.
**NOTE: 95% of the times, you'll need VobBlanker to process and filter out craps, junks, dummy cells or left over encrypted sectors.
Basically, once you've successfully completed ripping the movie via DVDFAB Decrypter, just PROCESS the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker, wait 5 - 10 minutes for VobBlanker to finish, then import or Open Files via DVD Shrink and continue on with your transcoding/shrinking process. Finally, burn your final VIDEO_TS or ISO Image file at your desire burning engines.

alkohol,
I had to look it up as I had never heard of it also( site below). They want $35.00 for a DVD ripper. It kind of Makes you want to reverse engineer DVDDecrypter and charge $25.00. LOL
rainiam,
I looked at the FAQ section for the software you mentioned and 6 Hours + is about right. Can you get your $$ back. You can use like Alkohol suggested DVDFAB Decrypter as it is free. Should take you 15 minutes to rip the DVD and if needed you can use VobBlanker to correct any of the problems w/ the structure in about 8-10 minutes. Both programs are free
