Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and relatively new to mac using. I've tried the original tips from mediaguru with some of my dvd collection and run into problems using MTR

1- with some classic dvds ( usually less thn 4.4 GB) the rip process seems to work ok, the films are viewable using vlc but not other media players. and when burnt the discs are unplayable on my samsung950hd dvd player

2- with other films there is an error message at the end of the ripping process stating that there may be difficulty playing back...
why should this be? I have read that MTR is not 100% effective but so far I've had zero success. these films are unviewable even on vlc

could you guide me through where I've been going wrong?

your help much appreciated

what movies? if they are the new ones.. you will need to donate to get the latest beta releases of MTR. if you are using dvd2onex you can strip out just the movie.. and un-tick the empty files.

for donation info.. check here

1-I burnt the discs ( of new dvd's of old sixties films) using toast 6 and followed mediaguru's advice re: using data tab and burning in dvdrom setting ( data) and also dvd from video_ts setting. The films after having been ripped would only play on VLC and not on other media players and the discs once burnt would not work in my dvd player. Should it be possible to make playable discs for all dvd players by this process or are some of the newer players immune to these techniques of ripping compressing and burning

2-they were new films. forgive my ignorance but what is this donation thing and why would my version of MTR( 2.6.6) come up with that error message

thanks man

you should be able to. what other players are you trying to play these on your computer?
also.. what brand of media are you using? dont use anything cheap.. its not worth it.

of course the companies are making new copy protections and what not. so that's why you need to update the ripper. the only way to get the new version is to donate. i'm not using the new version.

you can get DVD2OneX to strip out the empty sectors.. and make a playable movie.

I'm using imation dvd which seems a reasonable brand..what do you think?

the players I've tried dvd player on mac powerbook G4 and real player and windows media player

how does the donation work? how much do I give and do I need to register myself in the scheme or something?

with DVD2OneX do I need to always remove empty sectors..I didn't realize that!

ok.. first off.. get rid of the imation.. they arent good.. get some verbatims.
that may be part of your issue

for now.. if its working fine.. no need to donate just yet. but the standard donation would be around $30....

in DVD2OneX.. you dont always need to remove them... but whenever mtr gives you that message at the end of the rip.. just check it..

hi again,

I tried to contact MTR originator as you advised to get the most recent version of mtr

but have had no reply.

I presume that the newest version would cover newer copyright protections put on newer dvds. is that correct?

do you manage ok with version 2.6.6?

and which version of DVD2OneX should i go for as a minimum?

sorry if questions a little pedestrian. I'd love to be up and running but no joy so far.

that is strange that he didnt answer.. i'm sure he tries to..
i do ok with 2.6.6, really havent needed it for much.. some of the newer movies may require the later versions. but then again.. the movies lately aren't that great. lol

i dont think you can find the previous versions of DVD2OneX..
just get the trial version of the latest one.. play with it and see how you like it

Hi

I now have the full version of dvd2oneX

Trying mac the ripper again leaves me with the error

message that there are bad sectors in the dvd and to check playback before burning

the vast majority of the discs I've tried come up with the error message

any ideas as to what is happening welcomed

what dvds are these? are these new ones?
depending on what version of MTR you have, it may not work with some of the newer releases.

These are old and new ones eg Polanski's Repulsion, Truffaut's the man who loved women , as well as 2001 space odyssey, frantic (1986), liveflesh from the 90's

Is there something that I'm doing wrong because it sounds like most people get at least some degree of success. the ones that didn't show the error message were old bergman films persona and through a glass darkly both of which are also under 4GB and don't need compression

help me please thelox714..I'm losing faith

i'm trying to think on what it could be.. i know if MTR is giving you bad sectors.. you may need to get the latest version of mtr.
or it may be a badly pressed disc. they may have had a bad batch.. but it being with that many.. i'm doubting that one. you may want to check other mac rippers..

i'll see what i can find
