if you have an internal hard drive, yes, you would need the ps2 hdd utility disk like the one that comes with FF11 (there might be another disk but im not sure), but if you have an external one all you can do is load games you have stored on it and play them.
-v7 PS2 (needs new motherboard) w/ dms 4 chip
-i386 w/ 2 80gb hdd dual booting WINXP and DEBIAN 4.0 "ETCH"

you need either the official sony hd, or a good modchip that supports it.

all you need is an internal hdd, and a lil thing called hdloader, you do not need a modchip or an official sony hdd, and i use an original ps1 game to boot up my hdd, and that is it....but i am also trying to find out how to put saves on it instead of your memory card

Well, yeah, you can transfer saves between your memory card and hd (sorry dlux, I forgot the name of the program), but you cant save directly to a non official hd.
