Hey Guys, well I was successfully burning DVD's with Nero for about a year and a half and now all of the sudden I cant. I read some of the other threads, and it was suggested to post the Nero log file. Problem is, I DONT HAVE AN "AHEAD" folder..? Is this weird or what? How can Nero 7 Ultra be installed on my machine without an Ahead folder? If anyone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it! I would love to post a log so that someone can help me once again copy a dvd! By the way, I usually use DVD Shrink .

If you are using Nero7, then you wont have an Ahead folder

to locate log in Nero7 try this

Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt

Your Nero is out of date, update it. But not the latest update, taht's full of bugs, the previous one. I'm sure someone here has it saved.

Fix your DMA, here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038
Do not multitask while you are burning. I see you only have 8mb!! of free memory.

Try to burn only to 4300MB

Use better media, Sony media is good but only if it is made in japan (MIJ). Other good media is Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim , Fuji MIJ or maxell MIJ.

Here's the link to the version GlueEater mentioned:
http://httpdl6.us.nero.com/software/nero7/Nero-7.0.1.4b_eng_no_yt.exe
Uninstall Nero - then run the nero clean tool. Here's a link:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html
Now reinstall w/ the version above.

Thank You All SO much for your responses, sounds like I may eventually figure out my problem with all of your expertise!
OK, first off, I took Loco's advise and erased much of my Nero history on my first post, except the last and pertinent info. (sorry about that, again proving my rookie status)
Then I checked out my DMA as suggested by GlueEater, but both my Primary and Secondary IDE channels were already set to "DMA if available" under Transfer Mode..SO, no need to do anything with this, correct?
Lastly, I unistalled my Nero and then tried to clean my system with the tool suggested by binkie7, but when I run it, it says " The Nero General Clean Tool has detected some Nero applications which are not supported by this version. In order to avoid damaging of your system the application will be closed now." Any suggestions as to this?
Again, thanks to all of you for your responses, this site is just great.

Use the clean tool found here to remove nero from your system:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/General_CleanTool.html

After the uninstall is complete, reboot as directed and reinstall nero7 version 7.0.1.4b, you should have no problems reinstalling it now.

Well, I used the clean tool that Johnl suggested, which seemed to work. Then I reinstalled Nero from the link given by binkie 7 (thanks for that!) After Nero was reinstalled on my system, I anxiously tried to copy some DVD files on my hard drive to a disc. 20 seconds into the process, I got the same burn process failed error. Here is the latest Nero log....I cant thank you guys enough for contributing to this thread, hopefully this will help many others as well. Looking forward to your suggestions, and Thanks again!

The problem with your last attempt is shown here:
********************************************************************

Book Type request [LG]: DVD-ROM
Changing the Book Type was finished with error, return code -1
*********************************************************************
Your burner is not able to booktype the disk as a DVD-ROM.

Here:
*********************************************************************
8:41:18 PM #13 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2568
Recorder: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N, Media type: DVD+R
Disc Manufacturer ID: SONY, Media Type ID: D11, Product revision number: 0
Disc Application Code: 0, Extended Information Indicators: 3
*********************************************************************
The log here shows that you are using the correct disks (DVD+R) to apply booktyping to, but the process is failing. Your burner may not be able to perform this function, you should check with the manufacturer to see if an update (firmware) is availabe to add this feature. In the mean time I suggest you set booktyping to automatic in nero for your drive.

I'm also seeing here:

This is usually an indicator that the drive doesn't like the media your using, try another brand, one recommended by the drives' manufacturer.

Note: you still haven't updated the drives' firmware as gwendolin suggested to version 1.19, you should do this as it adds additional media compatibility/enhancements to your drive.

Thanks for the suggestions. Johnl and Gewndolin, sorry again for my lack of understanding, but what is firmware and am I supposed to download the trial version from the link provided by Gwendolin? Also, I would like to set the booktyping to automatic in Nero, can someone direct me as to how to do this. By the way, I don't understand why my burner would not be able to perform the booktype function, as I have used this exact machine for copying hundreds of DVD's within the past 18 months. Again, I apologize for my ignorance, but MAN am I learning some things!

Firmware is just a set of software instructions that tell the drive how to operate under certain conditions (like what write strategy to apply when burning to media, etc...).

Updating your drives firmware will provide it with added media compatibility among other things depending on what's included. Download the update and run the file to install.

Booktyping:
I forgot to mention that shrink will also try and apply this operation if instructed, so change the setting in DVD Shrink's preferences in the backup section. Make sure to uncheck "Booktype DVD-ROM".

Chances are that this is where Nero is being instructed to apply booktyping, but you should also mke sure Nero is set to automatic.

**Not at home so I will try and remember**:
Run Nero burning rom and goto drives--> select drives, click on the drive that represents your burner then select more options, look for booktyping and make sure it's set to automatic.

OK...wow this gets deep (especially for a newbie) but extrememly interesting!
johnl, I went to the link that gwendolin provided to download the firmware, but it said the available update (c111) was for Dell OEM drives only, and I have an Compaq Presario machine, so I dont think this will work, will it?
Also, I confirmed that in my Nero, the booktyping was indeed set to "automatic", so thats good. I went to DVD Shrink, and sure enough, the "Booktype DVD-ROM" was checked, so I unchecked it.
Checked the status of the DMA on my machine, as suggested by GlueEater, and although both the primary and secondary IDE channels were set to DMA if available under transfer mode, I did notice that the "current transfer mode" on the secondary channel under "device 0" says "PIO Mode", could this be an issue? The current transfer mode on the primary channel says "ULTRA DMA mode 5".

All of these postings are most helpful and appreciated, and I only hope I will be able to contribute somehow to this site in the future.

Something else odd that I've noticed:
When the cd-dvd rom is empty, my machine recognizes it by labeling it "DVD/CD-RW Drive(D:)"
But when I insert a blank Sony DVD, it then recognizes the drive by labeling it "CD Drive (D:)"
Isn't this weird?

Gwen didn't tell you to DL that particular f/w, she said the newest is 1.19 according to rpc1, however, there isn't a DL available there...but I found one for you.

http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GWA4040N

1.19 is the one you want.

You need to uninstall the drivers for your secondary channel and reboot windows. Here is a guide if you need it:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Firmware may take care of the misreading of your drive.

Gwendolin....please, please, I can't stress this enough... " I am a total ROOKIE and I have NO CLUE"
Please don't take offense as to my misinterpretation of your post, I am learning by the minute. I appreciate your offering to help me with this lingering problem, and again apologize for my lack of knowledge.

Now, back to the issue at hand. I did as suggested by LOCO and downloaded and flashed my hard drive with the firmware for HP (1.19), seemed to work and my machine recognized and installed the drivers for the drive upon restart. I also reinstalled the drivers for both the primary and secondary IDE channels. Under both, the transfer mode is "DMA if available". Under the primary, the current mode is Ultra DMA Mode 5, under the secondary, the current mode is Multi-Word DMA Mode 2.

I then tried to burn again, and received an error. I will post the lastest log below, and thanks to you all for keeping your concentration on this rather long and growing thread! SORRY again gwen!

Burning too close to the edge of the disc, set target size in DVD Shrink or Recode (whichever you use) to 4300.

Where were those Sony's made, Japan or Taiwan?

johnl...I confirmed the booktype box in Shrink is unchecked, thanks much!! LOCO, I do not multi-task when I burn, so something else must be sucking the resources on my machine. I set the target size in Shrink to 4300, thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately the Sony discs were made in Taiwan, not Japan, and I have read in other threads that this is not good (although I have used these exact discs in the past without problem). I will get new media. Thanks to you both for your continued posts.

I have tried everything mentioned above, and just got the latest error log that will be posted below. johnl, looks like a portion of the error has to do with booktyping, but just to reiterate, I changed the booktyping to automatic in Nero, and unchecked the booktyping box in Shrink. You guys rock for hanging in there with me on this!
