I am trying to figure out if the reason why some of the movies I burn skip is due to using the computer for other things while it is either analyzing, shrinking or burning the DVD? Should one be able to use their computer for anything while doing any of the above?

I have a Dell 2400 Dimension with 512 ram. 1.2 Gig processor and a Plextar DVD burner if this matters at all.

It is best to leave the computer be while it is doing it's thing. Yes using your computer during the processes can effect the quility of the backup. Also you can try to custom set the output file to 4300 so it dosent burn to close to the edge of the DVD.

With those specs! Na!

Multi-tasking is just 1 of a slew of things that contribute to that issue. It's one of the first thing to rule out for playback issues.

Here's some more for skipping:

1) Media quality-cheap crappy media
2) Too fast burn speed
3) Too slow burn speed
4) Dirty laser lens-if stand alone player is only drive with issues
5) Fragmented hard drive
6) Paper/sticker labels- Big NO-NO!
7) Spyware/malware
8) Burner quality, which rules out your sweet plextor.
9) Compression
10) Burn program
11) and the list goes on

It all depends on which drive/s shows the skipping issues-how you are viewing them.

Is it a stand alone player/pc dvd-rom drive/or the plextor burner that shows you the skipping?

Usually stand alone players show these issues. If that is when those issues occur, then take note of where the issues occur and view that disc, using your pc,and the plextor burner that made the backup. Make sure it plays it OK.

It also depends where at on the backup that those issues occur: Beginning/Middle/End/or random?

That's why its best if you have a backup copy with issues,to play them in as many different pc drives or stand alone players as possible. This will help verify if it is a burner drive/media/or stand alone player issue.

What is the brand name/format/and speed rate of your blank media?
How fast did you burn them?
What programs are you using?

Explain to us how you made that backup copy, like it was entire disc/main movie only, etc.
