My friend brought over his laptop because its broke. Everytime it boots it will go as far as the windows loading screen and a blue screen comes up and says

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your compter. If this is the first time you've seen this stop errro screen restart your computer. IF thgis screen appears again, follow these steps....."

The steps its lists are to unistall antivirus, defrag utilities or backup utilities. I can't do those because I cannot get into windows. He's got a recov disc that I tried and it will load the setup but every option I chose brings be back to this blue screen? What Do you guys think? Hard Drive failure?

Yea it sounds like your HDD drive is corrupt , i had a similar problem when i was trying to install winXP for the first time on my new PC but that was because the HDD wasn't setup correctly with the CD-rom drive
Also what was he doing when it happened?
did he just turn it on or was he doing something on the laptop and something suddenly happened

Also it could be Spyware i had a nasty case of it about a week ago and it destroyed my PC it wouldn't let me do the recovery, i had to install WinXp all over again

I'm not sure. He just said it stopped working. I'll grill him more later.

Have you added new memory or made any hardware changes?
