I swapped out my DVD burner that worked fine with a HP dvd640 double-layer lightscribe writer. Dvds seem to burn fine and play down to the last few minutes and then freezes. I am using Fujifilm 8x 4.7GB discs that worked with the old drive.

Does the double-layer drive require hihger quality discs or is this a problem with the drive?

Thanks

Which HP 640 drive did you get? C/I/Etc?

Several different manufactures make the 640 series of writers.

Do you have the MID code for those fuji 8x?

Fuji has a number of different manufacturers as well.

Try this free program to find actual model#/firmware version/and the MID code of those fuji discs:

What other programs do you use for the dvd backup process?

Issues at the end of your backup can usually be fixed by reducing your backup target. The outer edge of media can be susceptible to uneven dye, usually in the lower quality media. It's easy to reduce that target if you are using DVD Shrink.

What drive is showing those issues? Your HP burner, while you view them on your pc or is it a stand alone player?

This is a prime example of media quality. That's why I only use quality stuff like Japanese sony/fuji, Japanese maxells,Verbatim, and Ritek. Fuji and sony also have some of their media produced in taiwan. The sony aren't too bad from taiwan, but fuji can throw a low quality manufacturer-especially in the dash format.

I am no fan of HP burners. I got the HP 640c and the performance is way below par for burning backups. Reading and lightscribing, very good. If you have room in your tower, you could set pc like mine:

Rip with the HP
Burn with your other writer.
