HI i jusy recently bought a DVD burner by emperix and i tried to burn some anime shows that were in avi to a dvd. First, i converted them to the appropriate types (Bup.,Ifo, and Vob.). Then i used nero to burn them to a dvd. Everything seemed to run smoothly nero said it wasd finished with no errors, but when i put it in my stand alone dvd player it doesnt work. I looked up my player on this website and it said it reads DVD+R's. Could it be my media. Im using Imation DVD+R it says "4.7 GB, 120 min., 8x speed) I really need some help here cuz i did everything right i think?

After you converted the AVI files to DVD format (BUP, IFO, VOB) do the converted files play OK from your hard drive? If you open them in PowerDVD, NeroShowtime or any software player do they play?

Then, after you burn them to DVD, can PowerDVD or NeroShowtime play the burnt DVD from your DVD drive? If you can get that far but they won't play at all in your standalone player then it sounds like an incompatibility with your standalone. Even though a website said your standalone can handle +R discs, try burning a -R disc.

Try what moonrocks suggested and let us know. You may have done everything right but those imations well definitely not 'A' list.
You can try to slow it down to 4x if burning at 8x and make sure your drives firmware is up to date. Players can definitely be picky with what the play.

I tried playing them on my computer and they work just fine. I also tried the dvd on a few other stand alones today and they didn't work either. Is it better to put multiple "episodes" on one dvd. i read somewhere that i should combine the episodes all together. Is this correct? I tried combining them just to see and the program "virtual Dub" said there playing speed was off by like some .0001 secs or something idunno. Well i'll buy some DVD-R's and some DVD+R's tommarrow and try lowering the speed as well. I guess i'll get reletek because i heard they were good. Any advice with this new info?

I made a mistake. My computer does read the DVD_Video. But when it goes to play it on the default player(WinDVD)it does not play, it does the same as the standalone DVD players and goes from Reading/loading to stop. If I use the other player (Cyberlink PowerDVD) it does work. Just thought i would add that for more detail to see if it could help fix this problem.

You didn't mention how you converted your .AVI to DVD but I'm wondering if you haven't created DVD compliant mpeg2 video from your .AVI files.

I don't use WinDVD so I can't help as to why it can't play them, but PowerDVD will play lots of media files besides DVD files so that's probably why PowerDVD isn't having a problem. IF you have an .AVI file and you want to burn it to DVD you have to re-encode it to DVD compliant mpeg2.

You could use TMPGEnc Plus. Then author it with something like TMPGEnc DVD Author, then burn it. There are lots of other apps you could use to do those steps besides TMPGEnc.

Try opening one of the .VOB files in VirtualDubMod and check the File Information. Make sure you have DVD compliant video resolution and framerate for NTSC (or PAL).

@djcazaman You are wrong. DVD+R booktyped to dvdrom are more compatible than DVD-R and will play better in all recent players. Booktyped are as close as you can get to the pressed originals. Read up my man.

Ok I try to use that TMPGEnc program to convert instead and it says (file will not open, unsupported.) I looked on the AviCodec program to make sure it was supported. It says:

File : 175 MB (175 MB), duration: 0:23:14, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 50 %
Video : 154 MB, 927 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 640*480 (4:3), XviD = XviD MPEG-4, Supported
Audio : 21 MB, 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

So I tried a different AVI. file just to see if it worked and it converted perfectly. The one i want is a Bleach(Anime) episode and the one that worked was a a movie.?!!
It said on the other avi:

File : 663 MB (663 MB), duration: 1:38:11, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 60 %
Video : 573 MB, 817 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720*352 (2.21:1), DIV3 = DivX v3 ;-) MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported
Audio : 89 MB, 127 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

I tried this one and it converted it and i was able to burn it and play it on my DVD player.YAY!!!!!
But i want the episodes. : (

So What could it be. i'll just be trouble shooting all night so if you guys see anything i would appreciate it.

I don't believe the Avicodec program is giving you reliable info.

Your problem avi is encoded with xvid. On one of my PC's I don't have xvid installed. I tried opening an avi file that was encoded with xvid with TMPGEnc Plus. As expected, it reported it could not open the file.

Yet, when I ran Avicodec on that avi file it told me it was supported. I then installed xvid on the PC and then TMPGEnc opened the avi no problem.

Install xvid and see what happens.

@johny54 i own 5 dvd players some very high end a couple low end i found that dvd+'s are troublesome but when u use dvd -'s they play in practically any dvd player this was the information i was giving so y would u waste time to make dvd+'s that might work in a few players or would u waste time and make dvd-that work in majority of players

Here is something, maybe something useful to know and read.

Fact: 100% of all original DVD movies are pressed as DVD-ROM
Fact: 100% of all original DVD PS2 games are pressed as DVD-ROM
Fact: all original DVD movies worked in/on any functional DVD players 100%
Fact: DVD-R will most likely work with 97% of all stand alone DVD players
Fact: DVD+R will most likely work with 95% of all stand alone DVD players
Fact: DVD+R "book typing" into DVD-ROM will most likely work with 99.99% of all stand alone DVD players.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.
