Of course it's totally possible, but I've never used firewire or usb capture devices and a notebook to do it. On a desktop it's pretty straightforward. Personally I've stopped capturing with my PC. It's easier to just use a DVD recorder to record the video to an RW disc and then edit and author with something like TMPGEnc DVD Author, and burn to disc.
