I've been using NVE 3 in Nero 6.6.0.18 w/no problems for the few AVI, MPEG files that I have and burning them to DVD. But...I have some DVD-Rs w/commercials on them recorded from standalone recorders. I've ripped them in, made a menu, added chapters, etc. and have had some audio out of sych issues with the VOB file DVDs. I don't care for the "cut" function for editing in NVE and MUCH prefer the simple by-frame cuts made in re-author mode of DVDShrink. I just want to rip my old DVD-Rs in, simple frame by frame edits, add chapter marks, add a basic JPEG or BMP file for a menu screen, and burn out for a basic DVD(that's just a little nicer than the standalone menu screens)...Anyone know of a simple freeware alternative? Thank you for any help...

For video editing, ripping, etc., I started out with Nero Vision Express. However, I was very dissatisfied with it. I eventually found something that I am very happy with. It's not freeware but works nicely: Pinnacle Studio Plus version 9.4.3 or newer.
For those who say it takes too long to figure out how to use it: I say that the time is very well worth it. I can do so much with it.

Also, for those who are new at this, you can save the two folders from a DVD to your hard drive and play them just like a DVD with Power DVD. Also, without having to get one of those sloppy ripping programs, you can work with the VOB files and more.

Thank you for the recommendation. I'll look into it...I just find the "cut" mode in NVE very frustrating when editing AND I hate having to "merge" VOB files to seperate more than one movie etc... I LOVE the simple frame by frame cuts that DVDShrink "Re-Author" mode makes BUT...I would like to have a simple graphic menu to go along with it...

The cut function in Studio Plus is easy to use. Note in the bottom left corner the + and -. You can enlarge it to 1/29th of a second. You can also do picture in picture and split frame with two simultaneous video segments.

Not sure what you mean by "having to "merge" VOB files to seperate more than one movie". Perhaps you have more than one movie on a DVD. Also,I recommend 1GB RAM and greater than 2 GHz processor.
