can DVD RW be used for backing up DVD?

It sure can, this is what I would recommend seeing you are just starting out in the world of burning. If you do make a mistake then it hasn't cost you a disc( we call them coasters) and it will save you some money.
The discs are a little bit dearer but you can re use them many times.
