Hi,
I have three Michael Moore movies in DivX format (~700Mb each). If I want to convert these to DVD format, I wonder how many I can fit on one DVDr and maintain at least the same quality as the DivX file.
Essentially, I realize that encoding one 700Mb DivX piece at 5000kbps and using an entire DVDr would probably be a waste as you can't improve the quality beyond that of the original.
Does anyone have a "magic" formula for figuring out the optimal bitrate in this situation (fit the most video at the best possible quality, without wasting space).
Thanks

Somebody might want to correct me if I'm wrong, but won't you have to inflate the file to make it play in a standard DVD player?

My inderstanding is this: Divx is a form of compression. To be able to watch a Divx movie on your PC you need the Divx codec installed. Now most home DVD players cannot read Divx; only MPEG, because they do not come with the Divx codecs. And most movies in MPEG format would take up most of a DVD.

I understand that the file would have to be inflated when transferred to MPEG2, its a matter of wondering how much to inflate it.
At about 2800 kbps with 224kbps AC3 audio you could fit about 190 mins on a DVDr - at least two movies. I would want to use a higher bitrate if I was transferring from DVD as I would get quality gains. However, I feel that a higher bitrate might not gain me anything in terms of quality when going from a highly compressed source such as a DivX file.
Any thuoghts or experience would help...
