There are some Kodak DVD-R on sale here (100 for $27). These are made in Hong Kong, and apparently carry the code TYG02.
Does anyone know if these are any good?
Thanks

nightborn- My understanding is anything coming out of hong kong media wise (DVD-R) (DVD+R) is considered crap media ! worse than CMC possibly ! Also the Clue to the quailty is in the media code you gave . It appears to be a Taiyo Yuden Code ! Taiyo Yuden media no matter who's name is on the wrapper or disc label is only made in japan ! End Quote " Let's see here we have Media made in Hong Kong with a bogus media Code for Taiyo Yuden ! = counterfit media and therefore suspect !And although KODAK is a Brand name because of the previously mentioned discrepancies I would'nt waste my time or money on either! Go with real Genuine TY or Verbatim media , or any sony , maxell , or fuji DVD media made in Japan the Made in Japan Fuji's & sony are Taiyo Yudens Although the Sony 8x DVD-R may show a Sony media code ! as long as it's made Japan side it's taiyo yuden ! additionally Ritek media or maxell branded media that is made in taiwan is also pretty good quality media as the maxells code out as riteks as well Officedepot DVD media is also made by ritek atleast the 8x is/was ! hope that helps you somewhat ? Just remember the following ! Japan Made media = Taiyo Yuden or maxell japanese media (Hitachi ) very good media ) Taiwan Made Verbatim (EXCELLENT) or Ritek( Good inexpensive media )Sony Taiwan Media is supposed to be good too but I'd Hold out for the Japanese Sony's if you can get them ! Ricoh Media is also made in taiwan as well and could be a third choice ! Just avoid Generic /offbrand media & anything that codes as CMC wjhich would cover the rest of the bad Taiwanese & hong kong media ! Good Luck & happy burning!

Thanks for the info! I used to swear by Fuji until I got some that were made by BENQ, and Maxell until I got some that were made by CMC and my LG home recorder hates them!
Back to the Kodak, I just checked The Source's other store here and they have the same Kodak, but made in India. Any better you think? Media Code AML. Never heard of it. I will avoid the HK ones though now.

Made in India: Likely moser bauer media but you said AML. Staple's have the playo +8x that are made by AML. Another low quality manufacturer. These cost about 10 cents each when on sale.
Those are 2 other manufacturers that quality rates with cmags.27 cents is way too much for that crap.
Watch out for Made in China/Austria/and Malaysia as well. Stick with the Made in Japan spindles. I go along with Bigtoxy69 with the Sony 1x-8x. Get the japanese, but those sony in either format are pretty decent if they were made in taiwan. Fuji is another great media, made in japan. Be cautious of the taiwanese fuji in the dash format.
Office Depot: Great ritek media in the 8x speed. 16x dash,I'm not sure of. Ricohjpn on the OD plus 16x. 20 cents each when on sale.
What stores do you have nearby like Staples/Office max/Office depot/Bestbuy?
We have threads on all the sales of the week here for us local buyers.Keep an eye out for it. I get all my ty/Hitachi maxells/and verbatim for 30 cents a piece max!

I avoid Staples, they are way overpiced, by like $10 - $20 a spindle!! Basically I only buy from Best Buy, Future Shop, and The Source by Circuit City. If wal-mart has some on sale I will go there too. It is getting hard to find Japan media here now, which is why I am asking about these ones. Either I can buy a Sony 50pk made in Japan for $25, or 100 of these Kodaks if any good for $2 more. But so far from what I have seen and heard, I will avoid them and wait for a better deal. All the Fujis here now are Taiwan garbage as are Maxell. If I could find Japan ones, I would buy them.

I haven't paid over $15 for a 50 pack of regular dvd+/- r media in over a year. Bestbuy had the 25 packs of verbatim 16x on sale for $7.99 this week-still too much. A week or two ago, I picked up 550 sony tys at Office Max. These were $14.99 for their 50 pack tubs.
Staple's is my prime source of sony tys. Same $15 a 50 pack spindle of +1x-8x.Also their 30 pack fuji tys every 3 months or so.
A lot of members have been getting Ty-g02 on the sony dash 1x-8x,made in japan spindles. If staple's doesn't have the japanese spindles of maxell and sony,I take them over to wal-mart and get their japanese sony spindles.
I get my full hub printables at wal-mart. Last pack I picked up, there were spindles of Made in Taiwan on those +8x. I picked up the japanese hitachi full hub printables.
I haven't seen anything on the sales starting tomorrow, but I'll start a thread on if if someone else doesn't.I know staples have the HP 50 pack tubs for $14.94. This is another brand name I avoid. They also have a ton of memorex sales for the same $14.94 price, and I avoid them as well.

you must be in the U.S. A sony 50pk here at wal mart is $25. BestBuy is selling these same Kodak for $59 for a 50pack, exact same ones the source is selling 100 for now $24, it dropped again today. I picked some up anyways at that price, who cares! I did however avoid the HK ones as the indian ones got good reviews everywhere I checked.

I heard circuit city has the sony 1x-8x spindles of 50 on sale for $14.99 starting today. Lots of taiyo yuden should be mixed in with them. Look for the made in Japan on those wrappers.
$25 for a spindle of sony,not!
You got an MID code from those kodak discs?
Use this free handy program to ID them. Just insert kodak disc in drive/open up dvd identifier/select the drive that that disc is in/click identify. Then click the clipboard icon and paste it in your next post, like this:

I use Nero infotool to check them, i have not had a chance yet, I will check them in a bit and post.
As for the rest of your post, I am in Canada, we do not have a circuit city otherwise I would be looking for Japan wrappers, and yes, sony media is $24.99 for 50 at our wal-mart, I was in there today, and thats way to damn much!

AML: Junk/crap/landfill material! If you encounter any issues, burning or playback, that media would be the first thing to change.
I ran into some playo +8x that were AML.These were $5 for a spindle of 50,after rebate. It took 3 months to get that rebate, still haven't cashed it yet.
These produced a lot more of those little errors on my backups. I had to keep the burn speed slow. My benqs had no trouble, but I'm sure a picky stand alone will have fits with them.
$25 canadian isn't too bad after the exchange rate.
The sony in the plus format,1x-8x are pretty decent. Ty in the jap spindles and sonyD11 in the taiwanese tubs.

I have to ask, are you basing your AML response on your own personal issues with them? Because I have heard good things about it everywhere else, espcially for the $$$. I know they are not the best, but good enough for the money I am sure.

Here's my opinion of AML media- Playo +8x that were burned at 4x:
Here's a scan of my verbatim +16x that were burned at 12x:
Quite a bit of difference.
My newer dvd players and all 3 of my benqs have no trouble.I wouldn't consider burning them at 8x. But throw those backups into some older players with some wear and tear on them and they'll pick apart all those little errors. I'd also have a harder time re-ripping these backups that are on aml media.Longevity is another factor. Everything I burned with those aml media, was of no importance. Just 10 cent discs to fart around with. I'd hate to back my OS bootdiscs with that crap. I also wouldn't even consider on the fly copy with those discs.
Edit: I'm having web hosting site trouble, LOL

First signs of pixellation/freezing/skipping/or no disc inserted errors, media would be the first thing to change.
Good Luck and burn on!!!!!!!!1
