It usually depends of which burner drive you have. Some will favor a certain format, even different MID coded dvd media.Different burners/different formats. Take BENQ. Definitely the plus format. Take pioneer and NEC,definitely the dash format.
What is the brand name and model # of your dvd-rw drive?
GQ: I'd avoid like the plague. They use some crappy manufactures. That's the #1 priority with dvd burning, you need the quality media. Not only to successfully burn them, but stand alones can have trouble with the low quality manufacturers. This will lead to issues like pixellation/freezing/skipping/and no disc inserted errors.
Here's a prime example of crap media. Say you compress a dvd-9 of around 6-7 gbs onto a blank dvd-5. This is extreme and the low quality media may not cut it. You are more likely to have to slow down that burn speed/reduce the backup target size/or both, just to get that low quality media to play in your stand alone player/s.
It can still coaster out.You get 5 or 6 burn errors in a row,and windows will revert you dmas into pio mode. You can prevent a slew of issues with quality media like verbatim and taiyo yuden.
Plus or dash.
Another thing to factor in,is if your burner has the capability to booktype. This booktyping can only be performed on certain drive. It alters the plus format to dvd-rom.Only the plus format can be booktyped. This will help the compatability of your backups for those picky stand alone players. It actually fools them into thinking they are dvd-rom. It's a very nice option in case you run into a standalone or 2 that doesn't recognize your backups.
Fuji/Tdk/as well as most brand names will vary between spindles/different quantity of spindles-case packs/and formats. You may get Ty media on a batch of TDK,then next batch will be Cmags.Huge difference in quality.
If you haven't burned anything yet on your drive: Best bet would go to one of those local stores like Office depot/Office max/Walmart and pick up a small pack of maxell. Make sure you look the wrapper over for Made in Japan on those maxell. They come in 3/5/and 10 packs. Pick up a pack of both plus and dash, but the dash packs definitely have to be made in japan. Then burn a couple and test them out in all your pc/stand alone players/and pc drives. Test them in every drive that you think will play your backups.Play them on your friends pc and stand alone players as well. Stick with the format that performs the best.
