Spitfire, your firmware seems to be up to date. I don't know which manufacturer made that memorex writer. The firmware in your drive may not be programmed to burn those verbatim.
If it fails during the lead-in phase, usually firmware updates take care of them. You may have to wait around for the next firmware update to come out. Some brand names are slow at putting out newer updates to handle the newer media.
I'll investigate the actual manufacturer of you memorex writer.

Be careful, the Khypermedia I have code out to be the Infamous, CMC MAGS!
They will work fine for a year or so, then deteriorate.
Keep an eye on them as time goes by.

take heed of the good advice from the people here trying to help you, as to your khypermedia working perfectly NOW, give it a couple months, then see how "perfect" they work then...
as to Princo & quality, those 2 words shouldn't even be placed in the same sentence together, it's a contradiction of terms~ :) as to the Verbs not working for ya, sounds like firmware issues by ur manufacturer of your drive as saugmon pointed out...16x rated media is NOT accepted by all makes and models of burners, especially if their firmware updates are few and far between...

spitfire,
I doubt you will be able to burn those 16x verbatims with your memorex drive. Another member was having the same problem (same drive and media). He even emailed memorex and they told him there was no firmware available for that media. Since that drive is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1673S he crossflashed it with lite-on firmware and walla it burns those 16x verbs now no prob whatsoever.

spitfire,
There is always risk involved when you crossflash a drive and it also usually voids your warranty. I just want to point this out, you do so at your own risk.
You have to dl f/w for the lite-on SOHW-1673S and flash your memorex dvdrw with that f/w. Here are some tools you might need and can read about http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441
Here's some f/w http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html Note: I think this f/w ? KS0B - patched - crossflashing (for 1673S, etc.) for the SOHW-1693S will work but not 100% sure. Like I said do so at your own risk.

If I was in the market I would most likely get the benq 1650 or 1655. My 1620 has been a very good drive.

Where's the 1650 being sold at? I heard it was in europe?
I helped another member a couple weeks ago with the compatability of their 1650. Their 1650 wouldn't play any of their plus format backups that it produced. Some other member posted it was booktype ready, built into it's firmware. I told them to d/l qsuite 2.0 and after a couple days they did. No problem now with that 1650 reading it's own booktyped backups.
Lots of 1620s at ebay, and a couple of 1640s. I'd like to find another 1640 to throw into my single drive pc to fix the overburning issue.
Qsuite 2.0 doesn't control the overburning with the 1620 drives.
garmoon: Sweet stuff. My 3 benqs love those ritek-r03 discs. My burn and playback sucsess of the Ritek-R03 equals taiyo yuden/maxell/and verbatim. Why pay 30 cents each for maxell ritek-r03,when you can get the OD Ritek-r03 for 20 to 25 cents each?

saugmon I haven't used them yet. I'm still on TDK Taiyo Yudens and I still have a ton of verbs too. I'm like my wife I don't need it, but it's on sale, so I buy it. BTW I just backed up Goblet of Fire with a Verb DL with AnyDVD and Decrypter in Iso Read/write. Sweet. 1st time I had used decrypter for DL disc.

saugmon,
I'm not sure if the 1650 is available on the US market yet but soon will be. The 1655 is available now. Benqs even got another drive coming out soon. It's the 1670. They changed the chipset in it and I haven't heard hardly anything good about it.

spitfire,
You can try flashing your drive with the stock JSOD f/w for the lite-on SOHW-1673S. If it won't let you do that then you can try the KSOB f/w for the Lite-on SOHW-1693S. It is already patched for crossflashing the 1673 to a 1693 so it should work. Remember there is always risk involved in crossflashing but I've never had any problems or heard of any. You don't need to do anything with your drivers only the f/w.

spitfire,
Go here http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44 and start a thread stating what you want to do. They have a forum dedicated to lite-on's and their rebadges and should be able to get you fixed up. I thought you might run into the problem you had. There are some other tools you might have to use such as omnipatcher or flashfix. I have never crossflashed a rebadged litey with lite-on f/w. I have only crossflashed lite-ons to later model lite-on f/w eg. my lite-on is a SOHW-1633S flashed with SOHW-1653S f/w. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
