Burn DVD from avi files

I am trying to use Nero to burn a dvd that will play in regular home dvd player from a avi that I have saved on my HD. No sucess so far. I don't know if I am using Nero correctly or if there is some other specail way of burning a dvd. Any help would be appreciated.

There has been some talk that Nero is somewhat 'buggy' when it comes to burning home DVDs. I had constant failures trying to use it. Now, I use TMPGEnc to encode avi files to mpeg-2 and then use Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 to set up menus, chapters and finally a DVD image (.iso). Finally, I use Prassi PrimoDVD to burn the image to DVD - works 95% of the time for me!

Hello
If you have Roxio 6, you can do this is a single click. The Dvd builder program included with the other packages converts Divx, avi and other formats into DVD viewable on most home DVD players. But it takes time, the encoding process take the same time as the full length of the avi or divx and then it burns it. So entire process can take 3hrs for 2hr movie and 1hr burn.
